Type of Hearing Loss: Sensorineural hearing loss caused by damage to the cochlea or auditory nerve due to medications from chemotherapy.
Symptoms: Bilateral high-frequency hearing loss, tinnitus and/or speech perception difficulty

Type of Hearing Loss: Conductive. The eustachian tube cannot open and close. Which causes the middle space to suck the fluid from the surrounding tissue, builds up in the middle ear space, and impedes the movement of the ossicles and eardrum

Treatment: Claritin, antibiotics, pressure equalization tubes if frequent

Blocked Tubing

• Earwax or moisture in the tubing can stop sound from getting through.

  • Use an air blower or wax loop to clean it out.

Blocked Tone Hook

• If the tone hook (on BTE aids) is clogged, sound won’t pass through.

• Clean or replace if needed.

Microphone Blockage or Damage

• A clogged or damaged mic may cause weak or no input.

• Clean the mic area with a brush or replace the mic cover.

• BTE: Sits behind the ear and for all loss levels.

• ITE: Custom in the outer ear is usually good for mild to severe loss.

• IIC: Tiny and hidden deep in the canal, usually it is best for mild to moderate loss.

• RIC: Small behind-the-ear with a wire to the canal for mild to severe loss.

• If the child wears bilateral processors, try using the other cable or battery pack to troubleshoot.

• Communication is key—keep caregivers and the audiologist informed to work through issues together.
