Ma Rainey and the Harlem Renaissance

Ma Rainey is often known as the "Mother of the Blues", most known for her deep-sounding voice, making it unique compared to the other blues artist during this period. She shared her experiences of what it was like to be a bi-sexual African American woman in the lyrics of her songs. I chose her because she openly wrote songs that provided a perspective on how difficult it was to be a woman struggling with depression.

During the Harlem Renaissance, the blues genre of music flourished. It gave different people a perspective they would never personally feel, creating a stronger sense of culture in the African American community. Ma Rainey's lasting impact was showing people that being comfortable in one's sexuality was okay and that emotions were meant to be heard, as we can see in her songs that she left for us to listen to still today.

With the ending of prohibition, the alcohol business started to sky rocket, which not only helped the economy in giving the U.S. something to tax on, it also provided a lot of citizens that were left without jobs due to the Great Depression with jobs that they could live off of once again. The 21st Amendment is still around today, but compared to the taxation of so many other things, it's just another thing to keep the economy rising.

The 21st Amendment has not really changed over time, as we are still able to sell and distrubite alcohol as is, and most states tax on the purchase of alcohol. During the Great Depression the economy was hit incredibly hard, so giving another thing to tax on in the future can ensure the economy will never take that hard of a hit again.

The 21st Amendment was recieved very well by the American Citizens because not only did it make the economy rise and provide more job openings, it wasn't a punishable offence in the eyes of the law if one were to get caught.

The 21st Amendment gave each state the right to choose the law of prohibition and how they wanted to go about that. We can tie that to today, as in 2019 Illinois raised the legal age to purchase tobacco, and any items including tobacco, from 18 to 21. Giving the states the right to choose also happened when Roe V. Wade was overturned, giving each state the right to choose whether abortions were illegal or not.
