Stage 1: Trust Vs. Mistrust

The first stage of Erikson's theory of psychological development is Trust Vs. Mistrust. This critical stage in development starts at birth and ends around the age of 18 months. If the child is shown love and compassion, he/she will gain the trust of parents/ caregivers. They are so unsure of the world at this time and they need stability to develop a trusting relationship. A parent or caregiver not giving the child what they need, they develop mistrust. "If trust predominates, as it should, children develop hope: the belief they can fulfill their needs and obtain their desires." This statement goes along with what I chose to do with my children. When my daughter was a baby, we had a set bedtime routine of nursing before bed. This makes the baby comfortable and they are able to develop a sense of trust.

This is the second stage in Erikson's development, it allows a child to learn their own independence during the toddler age. This occurs between 18 months and 3 years of age. During this age, toddlers are able to determine what is right and wrong. Given they have a sense of trust with an adult, and have been able to grow from lessons learned. When my children were this age, they started to become independent and do things on their own. I would let her choose her own outfits in the morning, and brush her own hair. These things made her feel very independent on a daily basis. I knew that allowing her to do these things would aid in her development and benefit her. According to our textbook "Toddlers need adults to set appropriate limits and shame and doubt help them recognize the need for those limits." I am able to work with my daughter and teach her things and watch her develop because of the relationship we have formed based on trust and autonomy.

Stage 3: Initiative Vs. Guilt

This is the third stage in Erikson's developmental timeline. This is a time for children to really learn their independence. This usually takes place around the preschool age or ages 3-5. During this stage children create independence by making their own decisions. My youngest daughter is 5 and I see this to be true daily. I allow my daughter to help plan her day and make choices about what she would like to do. I explain the risks to her about how some choices might be safer than others and why we should choose one over the other. When she chooses one that is not the best, I try to explain to her the outcomes so she can learn for the next time. Children gain a sense of initiative when they are able to make choices for themselves and make judgments about things. I have allowed my daughter to ride her hoverboard without practicing it first because she felt ready to make that choice. Although that did not go so well the first time, it was a learning experience and it made her feel confident in herself to make her own choice. "Children to fail to live up to behavioral standards, may feel guilty, that is regret their behavior but they do not necessarily feel a lack of self worth as when they feel ashamed. Parents or caregivers failing to allow their children to develop in this stage may discourage the child from being confident and wanting to make choices.

Stage 4: Industry Vs. Inferiority

This is the fourth stage on the development timeline and this is where children learn to accomplish their own goals. They learn to build their self esteem by forming new relationships. This stage takes place between the ages 6-11. When my younger sister was in this stage of development I remember her being nervous to go to school and to join clubs and after school activities. "As with all of Erikson's stages, there is an opportunity for growth represented by a sense of industry and a complementary risk represented by inferiority". I think that my example displays feelings of inferiority, as my sister was experiencing those feelings about going to a new school and the thought of joining a new club.

This is the fifth stage in the developmental timeline. This stage usually takes place between the ages of 12-18. I remember being in this development stage myself, and it is a tough one. This is a time of self discovery, a chance to decide who you are going to be. When I was at this stage, it was difficult. It's hard to know what is right and wrong and trying to validate your own feelings. Really unable to talk to my parents about things I was feeling I realized later on that this is one of the best but most emotionally confusing times. I got to decide the attitude I was going to have with those around me and the view I was going to have on the world. This was a time where I really learned what I liked and disliked. I got to develop into who I actually wanted to be.

"The effort to make sense of the self is part of a healthy process that builds on the achievements of earlier stages- on trust, autonomy, initiative and industry - and lays the groundwork for coping with the challenges of adult life."

Stage 6: Intimacy Vs. Isolation

This is the sixth stage of development and also a period where new adults are starting to face new lessons with their relationships with others and their emotions. This developmental stage happens between the ages of 19 and 40. For this one, I talked with my friend who was married at a young age. She said that she was not emotionally stable at this time and did not fully understand what she was doing yet. She still needed to figure out who she was and what she wanted out of life. "According to Erikson, a man is not capable of real intimacy until after he has achieved a stable identity." My friend waited until next time and did not jump into a relationship with a man before she knew he was ready and had a stable identity.

This is the seventh stage in Erikson's developmental timeline. This stage is very humbling for adults. They are in a later stage of life and they have already made relationships and connections with friends and family. This stage takes place between the ages of 40 and 65. People at this stage have a sense of Generativity when they feel that they are making meaningful contributions. They are also worried about their children and families at this time in their life as well. "Vygotsky believed there are many ways to develop as there are different cultures and experiences."

Integrity Vs. Despair

This is the last stage of Erik Erikson's development, Ego integrity Vs. Despair. This stage starts at 60 years old and since it is the last stage until death. During this stage, we reflect on our lives and all of the things we have done thus far. People will develop integrity when they feel like they have led a successful life. One's that don't feel this way will begin to feel despair, or guilty about their past. For this stage, I talked to one of my coworkers. She said that she felt she had accomplished everything she set out to do in life. She received a college degree, she had children and married and she made sure her children were taken care of. Even into adulthood she was still worried about making her kids happy and how she could contribute to someone else's life. "Elderly person achieves acceptance of one's own life, allowing acceptance of death." I hope that when I'm at this stage myself I feel integrity and am happy with what I have done.
