From the feedback and strategies suggested in the responses to Andrea and Toni, my plan for implementing international mindedness would be:

To create a buddy/penpal exchange with other students and schools from around the world. 

This would need support and permission from school administrators, parents and those in the country being communicated with. Countries chosen could be established using connections that we already have within our school community, taking advantage of the wide international links already in place.  
Collaboration with the other teacher/s would need to be organized prior so that guidelines for communicating are clear and consistent from both ends, with common aims and outcomes.

I see this as being a long term strategy, with investigation, research and communication taking place across the year, with different schools. Research that students carry out for each would also take time. Comparison and similarities and connections between different countries, and the students own lives made. 

The working of this can be assessed through the questions being asked, a growing understanding, empathy, identifying similarities and differences and making connections between their lives and lives of others

1. Organizing pen-pals with other States (Locally) perhaps in the city may be the first step to helping students see beyond their rural community. This could begin as a short term project, but depending on the commitment and enthusiasm, could develop into a large long term project, with whole school involvement. 

2. I suggest then starting within the classroom by having students search for information ( videos and stories) about different cultures and share interesting information with peers.

3.Use help offered by your librarian, and choose books for international authors, books about different cultures.

4. Celebrating the World Book Day by having different classes presenting different authors from different countries after reading about them.

5. Organize an international day

We celebrated Cultural Day this academic year in our school.  It was a long-term strategy but it was amazing! Everyone was excited and enjoyed the process of preparation.  

Each PYP class was given one country to represent. There were chosen different countries all around the world from which we have students studying in our school. Cultural Day in our school involved students, teachers and parents who created, participated and celebrated culture  in our community. Our students were welcome and encouraged to celebrate our diversity by performing activities in class and in assembly. Each class students performed a dance of the country they represent in the assembly.  

The students were involved in researching information, pictures and different interesting facts about counties for decorating displays. The classrooms were arranged  according to the country the class represented. There were presented flags, information about leaders and other famous people of the countries, main cities and currency on the posters. All guests could feel the atmosphere of nationality and individuality of each country, while entering the classrooms. They could taste national food, drinks and sweets, see the national attributes and values and hear national music.      

Our students dressed in clothes from different cultures and nationalities across the world. We had such a rich culture based celebration on different nationalities represented at the school. We were proud of our students  who were represented different countries all around the world. 

Cultural Day is a chance where we celebrate each other with our different and unique backgrounds. Students had an opportunity to get more information about different countries, their cultures, traditions, values, music, fashion, art, dance and food. Most of them wished to visit  other countries and explore them by themselves.
