"Imagine for a minute what kind of society it is in which some people can spend on a toy what it would cost to feed a family of 6 or 7" (Bambara 6).

Reasoning: It makes her realize the value of money and how much people have vs how much she has and how different an amount of money could be for her vs richer people.

Evidence: “But I feel funny, shame. But what I got to be ashamed about? Got as much right to go in as anybody” (Bambara 5).

Reasoning: Sylvia’s fear and shame when entering the store, which later turns to anger, makes it apparent that Sylvia is crossing the threshold into a place that she is unfamiliar with, and for the first time, she is truly realizing what Miss Moore is trying to teach her. Sylvia is now realizing that she comes from a much poorer community, and feels like she doesn’t belong there. She goes from being an innocent child to recognizing her place in society.
