1. What I know about architecture

When the word 'architecture' comes up, I immediately think about buildings and structures. I know the basics of how it's made, like cement is molded and hardened over thick wires that serve as the 'spine' of the building's entire structure.

2. What I learned about architecture after the module

I learned that architecture is an art form. It's purpose is often overlooked and neglected. It is a lot more than just a 'building' or 'establishment,' it has form. It is a complex organization of parts put together to serve a purpose. It's purpose may simply be that it is a location where people gather, or rarely, it may even represent something.

"Pearl": Sculpture by Virginia Ty-Navarro

Sitting proudly atop a firm block of wood at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, lies the beautiful "Pearl" sculpture depicting a woman's arms crossed over her chest. Upon first glance, one may notice its shiny brass color. The artist, Virginia Ty-Navarro, has done many of her sculptures in a similar bronze material, keeping the element of solidity and compactness. The feminine figure we see here has its arms crossed over its chest and its head tilted upwards to the right, as if she were in a thinking position. The texture of the figure adds a certain interest to the piece. It is rugged to the touch, which really blends in with the strong and compact theme, as seen in the darkness and solidity of the brass and wood. The lighting adds a sense of wonder to the piece. The roughness of the outer layer adds dimension and variety, especially when the light beams upon it. The way the light highlights her face is almost as if the woman is being enlightened, or even enriched by her own thoughts. A little detail I admire is the contrast between the wood and the feminine figure. The shiny roughness of the brass body is contrasted by the smooth, dark appearance of the block of wood. The wood's smooth texture and rich color serves as a an elegant foundation, all the while not taking the attention away from the solid brass figure. Overall, I am impressed with this sculpture and the artist's ability to add many elements, while also keeping a balance between them. Given the sculpture's relatively small size, the artist was able to make the most out of its space.

Source:

'Pearl' (1970) Metropolitan Museum of Manila, Metro Manila.
