He starts off by saying what type of day you should tame, he talks about how you should prepare your life raft in case you need it. He goes through the animals instincts and that you should never break eye-contact with the animal. Once you keep eye-contact, you need to start blowing the whistle and trip the sea anchor. Pi talks about the most important steps to tame an animal if you get stuck like him. He says to keep repeating it until the animal feels different about the whistle and rocking of the boat.

He used different sinkers, hooks, and lines to try and get food for not only himself, but also Richard Parker. He explains that it took him a couple of tries to catch something but he finally does. He used almost every part of his body to keep the fish until he could chop its head off. He then got better at it and started using other resources like the cargo net that Orange Juice floated to him on. With the it he caught a dorado, and a large sea turtle. At the end of the chapter he says that before he got on a boat he was a strict vegetarian.

It started with a green algae attached to h life jackets, and a darker, and stiffer algae on top. Then sea life actually started appearing. They were shrimp, fish that looked like it was permanently under X-ray, black worms with white spines, green gelatinous slugs, inch long fish, and different sized crabs. He tried everything but the worms and the algae. He couldn't control himself when eating the sea life. There was also barnacles on the hull of the lifeboat, which he used for bait and sucked the liquid out of it.

The first shield Richard Parker swiped at him and hit the shield, but pushed Pi into the water. Pi frantically swam back to the life raft scared of Richard Parker and sharks. He lost the shield when he was pushed off. Pi talks about how rarely a tiger will attack without warning. Richard Parker made his point four times with Pi, and Pi was ready to tame him.

He talks about how they should put different religious books in hotels. He talks about that if he had a good novel he would be fine, but he only has a survival manual and that he kept a diary, but with no dates. He says that keeping dates, can let someone get teared down by how many days they are stranded.

Pi rested most of the time but he was never able to sleep soundly. It wasn't the sea that disturbed his slumber, but his anxiety and apprehension that kept him up. On the other hand Richard Parker slept all the time. He always rested and took naps under the tarpaulin, unless the sun wasn't uncontrollably hot. He apparently slept on his stomach with his back legs sprawled out and his head placed on his hands.

He says that he still is a follower of all 3 religions. He thinks that whenever he is in trouble God has helped him out of it. He always says that even when he is sad or frustrated with God, God has always helped him through it. Pi would look at things and scream out what it means to him, and says even though he could be mad, he would always love God.

Richard Parker always froze up when the gun went off. He would stay where he was and his eyes would follow the flare. Pi couldn't  look at it, it was to bright.
