We Need to Take Care of Planet Earth (Gr. 1-2) by Charles Recchione

Throughout this learning unit, students will learn the relevance and importance of taking care of different elements apart of our Earth. Students will focus on how important the Earth's air, water, forests, and animals are for successful functioning of the planet, and how human activity impacts each. They will reach the understanding that human activity can play a huge role in each of these components, and it is our responsibility to work towards helping each one.

Students will describe how different people can be affected by polluted air, and label different levels of air quality. After reading the book Air (Environment Collection for Kids), the class will discuss as a whole group how they or other people they know may react to being in polluted air. The teacher will guide the discussion to understanding how certain people may be more affected than others, such as someone with asthma. Next, the class will use the AirNow supportive text webpage to further explore how different groups react to polluted air and how to understand an Air Quality Index (AQI). Lastly, students will practice judging air quality during a weather forecast activity. Small groups will read a kid-friendly version of different air quality indexes within weather forecasts and determine how clean the surrounding air is. This engagement will help students develop awareness and respect within critical literacy.

Students will identify what humans use that contribute to air pollution. Following reading Save The Air, the whole class will discuss what tools, equipment, machines, or other materials we use that produces air pollution. Next, the class will watch the Peekaboo Kidz video and analyze the NASA kids webpage for additional information on air pollution causes. Lastly, students will complete an individual matching activity of which common equipment or machines cause air pollution versus which ones don't (e.g., gas-powered cars versus a bicycle). This engagement will help students develop awareness within critical literacy.

Students will portray ways that children can help prevent air pollution. After reading Kids Can Keep Air Clean, the whole class will discuss ways that kids can help fight against air pollution. Lastly, students will be tasked with creating a multimedia presentation of different ways for kids to help the cause in small groups. Each small group member will be responsible for creating a page/slide/poster for a different way to help out. Students will utilize digital software such as PowerPoint, Canva, Padlet, etc. to create their presentation. When completed, the groups can then share their work with friends and family to help spread word of their cause. This engagement will help develop responsibility and action within critical literacy, and connect to developing digital literacy through multimodal learning.
