They provide opportunities for one-on-one friendships between individuals with special needs and their peers. They allow for integrated employment opportunities. They work to promote inclusion on campus. Students at West Chester University are matched up with fellow students with special needs at West Chester to create a strong friendship. They host a bunch of activities such as holiday parties, bowling, Buddy ball, game night, and many other activities. Best Buddies is not just exclusive to West Chester University, it is a program that is international.

The program is not only helpful for individuals with special needs but also for all others involved because it opens their horizons. Both sides are able to make strong connections that can last a lifetime.

If I choose to follow the special education route I will be working directly with children of special needs on the daily. Even if I end up in a general education classroom the chances of having a child with special needs in my classroom is very likely. Organizations like this help the students I will be working closely with in the future tremendously. This is extremely important to me personally because I have an older sister with special needs and if she was a part of a group like this when she was in school I know it would have been amazing for her.
