Stage 1: Trust vs Mistrust: Birth to 18 months

From birth to 18 months, there are a lot of firsts that are going to happen. Between babbling, breastfeeding, squealing, sleeping in my sons first crib by himself in his own room; to being able to sit up and crawl on his own. My first son was so hard, I was a first time single mother in high school> I was working 2 jobs while trying to get enough credits to graduate. This was hard on my son. From going to Grandpas house and then to day care, this would cause a lot of "mistrust" issues with my son. He would then trust me as he got older, knowing I would always come back for him.

When my son was 2 years old, he was already potty trained, off the binkie and the bottle. He was starting to use big cups, eating on his own, wanted to get dressed and bathed by himself. With my help, he was able to get fully dressed, his teeth brushed, and make his own bed. When he was being potty trained, he did have accidents, he was upset a few times over the accidents, but in the long run, for trying he got the appraisal and was able to have the help he needed, he was able to finally succeed potty training by 20 months old.

During school time, daycare, my son was always involved and happy making new friends. The first few weeks were the hardest trying to fit in once mommy or grandpa had dropped him off at the school. He would go to the daycare while I was at work and be picked up by grandpa. When I was done with school or work, he would come with grandpa to pick me up and we would go to the park or somewhere with other children to play with. If there was a couple people who would not want to join him and play, he would get upset, but find a way to make things okay by finding others to play with.

In Middle School, my son would like to sit in the back of the classroom and hide behind his books. When asked a question he would get it right. But, he would not like to be picked due to being scared of getting the answer wrong, and then being made fun of. While doing projects, some kids would make fun of him and the way he would shake or stutter when he was speaking, all due to his nerves. He was always afraid of being in front of large audiences or even speaking in front of large audiences. During Parent Teacher Conferences, he would get great reports, grades were great, but if he had to be in front of people, this was where he would not do so great. Turning in his work, even group work, he would do great, but just needed to get that push to get his work turned in.

My son is 15 and he is mixed between Hispanic and Caucasian. (Mexican-American). Many students in his school are not fond of his race, he was having issues at the beginning of the school year, with the way kids would speak to him or about him, this would cause him to be mentally confused. He tries to fit in with the other kids and groups. He has a "click" where there are multiple races and him hanging out. There are some good kids and they can be bad, we just have to make sure we are able to get them straight.

While my son is 15 years old, he is in his first year of high school. He is still confused on what he wants to be and where he wants to go to college when he graduates. We have had plenty of conversations over dinner or even going one on one to lunch about buying a home, building something from the ground up, just something to call ours. He was really wanting to just be going to school and not finish, but with the help with the counselors from the schools, he was able to make up his mind on going to College. He still has 2 years to make up his mind and choose. Whatever he wants to do, I hope he accomplishes everything like he has seen me do, even through all of the struggles. When he was a baby, his father walked out and left me to take care of him by myself. When he turned 14, his father came into the picture trying to make a mend and work his way into his life. He is telling my son what to do and what he needs to do, but this, is only causing more damage and causing him to push away from me.

At age 40-65 I hope I am in my home, one I spent my money on to build for me and my children. I hope that when I get a little bit older, I will be settled and able to complete so much more without having to struggle to make ends meet. I want to be on my feet financially, not struggling mentally, physically or emotionally. Since I was 16 years old, all I have done is work and go to school. I enjoy working all the time. I make more on the weekend since I am "weekend op". I want to open my own business and my own home by the time I hit the age 45 years. My children will be raised and on their own, so I will be old enough to help take care of my Grandchildren.

I want to work hard and make sure everything is paid off and there won't be any debt owed or stress over what needs paid or whether I will have something taken, my home, vehicle, or bills turned off.
