When Queen Elizabeth I (1558-1603)  inherited the throne, the practices of the Catholic religion were questioned by the queen due to the persecutions of the minority. The beliefs of men such as the German Martin Luther prompted a new religion called Protestantism

People who did not attend—for any reason except illness—were punished with fines. While it was not a crime to be Catholic in the  Elizabethan time , there was no legal way for Catholics to practice their faith.

It was a private theatre and was specific ment for the wealthy and highly educated classes of london. The Blackfriars soon became the premier playhouse in London. The price for admission was up to five times more than The Globe.
