         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>"General Ubico was known for being 'thorough, efficient, intelligent, and heartless'."(149)</li><li>Students, Professors, and Lawyers began a non-violent request to remove General Ubico through a published series of public articles(150). As the movement gained support, the dictator retaliated and declared martial law (151).This led to a petition of 336 signatures of prominent citizens, which became known as "Memorial de los 311", explaining the righteous actions of the students and requesting the removal of martial law. Protesters wore all black and participated in silent demonstrations of mourning (151).</li></ul><div><strong>Political System and Governing Regime</strong></div><ul><li>1944- General Jorge Ubico y Castaneda had been in dictatorship over Guatemala for 13 years (149)</li><li>General Ubico was from the Liberal Party Dictators who launched a violent campaign against any who opposed him (149) </li><li>During WWII, Guatemala joined the allies, which introduced US ideals to Guatemalans such as democracy and "The Four Freedoms" (149-150)</li></ul><div><strong>Terrain and Geography/Transportation<br></strong>Guatemala City become militarized with troops posted throughout the streets and public transportation (152-153)<br><strong>Economic Systems</strong></div><ul><li>The military open fired at a women's mourning demonstration killing Maria Chincilla (152)</li><li>The death of Chincilla led to a complete economic shut down. </li><li>People did not go to work and stayed in their homes. Guatemala City was crippled (153)</li><li>The shutdown led to the eventual resignation of Ubico (153)</li></ul><div><br></div>]]></description>
