We will first talk about the hour, minute and second hands, what they stand for. We will discuss how many seconds are in a minute, how many minutes are in an hour and so on. We will be focusing on the hour and just touch the half hour. Then we will move on to our video “What does the clock say” to get the kids moving and excited to learn. We will all sit on the ground together and play “I Have Who Has?” We will break off to play “Jungle Time” on Ipads for 15 minutes. The last project we will do is make our own watches. Once those are completed we will join back on the floor and I will ask them to show me the time on their watches

We will gather at the front of the room to discuss the hour, minute and seconds and what they stand for

I have a powerpoint presentation Link for them to watch on the smartboard that will be helpful to see the clock

The second hand is the long skinny hand that is moving around the clock all the time and doesn’t stop. There are 60 seconds in one minute.

The minute hand is the longest hand on the clock. There are 60 minutes in one hour

The hour hand is the shortest hand. There are 24 hours in one day

We will discuss what an hour is, where the hands need to be to show one hour

Have the kids stand up and watch “What does the clock say” on youtube. Let them dance around and have fun with this part! They need to get all their wiggles out!

Once the video is over, have them sit down on the carpet in a circle together. Pass out the “I Have Who Has” cards. Each child will have a card that has two clocks on them. They will have to determine what time the clock says. Example: “I have two o’clock, who has six o’clock” “I have six o’clock, who has nine o’clock” and so on.

Once we have gone around the circle, we will go to our seats and play “Jungle Time” on the Ipads for 15 minutes. There is a setting that is just the hour, make sure that is the one they are on, we have not touched on half hours yet!

Once Ipad time is over, we will be making watches.

I have cut out the watch templates, and the hands.

They will color the watch however they want to.

When they are done, have them bring the watch to you to push a brad pin through the center.

When they are done with this, gather back to the front of the classroom. Have them show you different times on their watches. Example: “Show me one o’clock on you watch” and they would adjust their watches to show one o’clock.
