Harrison's death and his parents' reactions further contribute to the story's commentary on conformity and rebellion by showing a brutal approach to rebellion and a sad truth of their conformity. Hazel's reaction shows just how much people conformed in this story when she states, "I forgot... something real sad on television..." it shows that even moments after she saw her son get murdered, she has forgotten. This demonstrates the story's commentary on conformity and rebellion by having something that would be a really big deal brushed off and forgotten in mere moments.

Preslee Drake: All of the characters in the story believe that enforced equality is better than having people who are better at certain things. They use the word ¨finally¨ to say that they are excited to see everyone finally be equal. ¨Pretty soon we'll be back to the dark ages again.¨ said George, impling that when people were not equal it was worse.

I believe that the technology today that would serve the same purpose as dehumanizing people would be AirPods or microphones. George has an earpiece that limits his thinking ability. The story says, “Every twenty seconds or so, the transmitter would send out some sharp noise to keep people like George from taking unfair advantage of their brains.” This earpiece can be substituted as airpods, something that people today already have. Microphones could also be an equalizer because if one was really talented at singing, the microphones issued to the performer could make the vocalist sound as bad or normal as the rest of society.

I think Harrison Bergeron could be depicting a very true reality that we may very well live in 2081. He starts off by saying “everybody was finally equal.” He then begins to list the ways that everyone is equal. He says,”They were equal every which way. Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anybody else.” I believe we are already headed in this direction now. There is so much hate and difference in opinions in the world. If the government stepped in, it’s very possible they would try to limit the amount of knowledge we have. Throughout the story, every time George started to think too much about one thing, a loud noise would ring in his ear. He would forget what he was thinking about, and that happened for everyone who thought too much. I think Vonnegut is warning us to not let the government have that kind of control. We can't all be the same. Society just doesn’t work like that. We need to have values and ensure that our voices are heard. We need to be able to be knowledgeable about things going on around us.

These allusions utilize these supernatural, powerful figures to events and people in the story. Harrison Bergeron, through descriptions such as "tore the straps of his handicap harness like paper, tore straps guaranteed to support five thousand pounds", "bar snapped like celery", and "smashed his headphones and spectacles against the wall", depicts Harrison as an extremely strong person. Paragraph 59 concludes this description, saying that even Thor, a strong god, would be awed at the sight of Harrison. Furthermore, when the Handicapper General "came into the studio with a double-barreled ten-gauge shotgun", it shows how these characteristics are similar to that of the Roman goddess Diana, goddess of wild animals and hunt, and is alluded by the name of the Handicapper General, Diana. The Emperor, Harrison, and Empress, one of the ballerinas, represent wild animals that were hunted down by Diana.

There is irony in the first paragraph for several reasons. One is the clashing of the information and how it is being presented. The tone makes it sound like the news is great and well-awaited, "Everyone was finally equal." and again in the last sentence where it introduces the idea of a Handicapper General, contradicting the already established idea that everyone is completely equal. True equality would mean no one would have specialized jobs over others.

I believe that technology is a detriment to society in the story. This is due to how the government uses technology to keep the people under their control. It is narrarated in the story, "Instead of a little ear radio for a mental handicap, he wore a tremedous pair of earphones, and spectacles with thick wavy lenses. The spectacles were intended to make him not only half blind, but to give him whanging headaches besides." (paragraph 44). This quote shows us how the officials used technology to "handicap" the people who were much more gifted in order to make society feel much more "equal". This would make it a negative factor to society, and people have all their thoughts controlled in order to prevent rebellion and disorder which in this case is something that would be neccessary in order for the people to repair society.

I found the author´s usage of the word handicap a bit offensive. The word handicap in the story is used to indicate that a person was intelligent or is good looking. I found the word ¨handicap¨ offensive because in the times we live in currently,¨handicap¨ is used to indicate a person who has some condition that markedly restricts their ability to function physically or mentally or socially. I find it offensive that in the story they use the word to mean something so rude instead of something that should be rewarded.

In the story, technology is essentially used to control the people and bring everyone down to the same level. 'And George, while his intelligence was way above normal, had a little mental handicap radio in his ear. He was required by law to wear it at all times. It was tuned to a government transmitter. Every twenty seconds or so, the transmitter would send out some sharp noise to keep people like George from taking unfair advantage of their brains."

The definition of equality in this story is very ironic. In the story they claim that everyone is equal, yet there is a very definition of equal in today's world. In the present day, we say equality is about raising people up to be equal and celebrating uniqueness. The story's definition of equal is bringing people down to a certain level of dull. They make people with intelect and remarkable talents normal and uninteresting so that everybody can be as normal as the rest of the world. In the quote "She must
have been extraordinarily beautiful, because the mask she wore was
hideous", they insituate that nobody can be better than anyone else, whether it's their physical characteristics or intelectual abilities.
