Parallelism makes the idea easier for readers to process because they sense a pattern and know what to expect. Character-wise I’d suppose that when one character parallels the other, they are very similar yet somewhat different.

In literature, the idea of parallelism seems to mean that two characters, objects or events are very similar. This can be seen from the examples of Robert Walton and Victor Frankenstein, who share very similar personality traits despite having come from different backgrounds. However, since the definition of parallel lines in Mathematics is “two lines that do not intersect or touch each other at any point”, I feel that parallelism also implies that characters, objects or events, no matter how similar they are, are not entirely the same. If two things were exact replicas of each other, they would be the same line, and not parallel lines. Perhaps this concept of “never meeting” also suggests that it would not be expected, or almost impossible in a real life scenario for two people who seem like the same person to ever cross paths, and literature makes that ironic by making it actually happen.

He related it to his feelings of deep promise to return to his sister. This shows that although he is undergoing a great journey, he is still observant and pays attention the happenings around him.
- When Victor was very busy with his research, his eyes were insensible to the beautiful charms of nature.

First off, I think about the parallel universes/realities that happen especially in comic book universes, where countless different timelines/realities exist in the same plane/space. In those books or shows, the characters that exist in both realities are uncannily similar, as they should be, but wildly different in their personalities or their fates (the things that happened/will happen to them)

But I guess in Frankenstein, it’s very much the opposite between Walter and Frankie. We’ll never know if they look similar, and I don’t think they are, but their dreams and aspirations, although different, are still similar in many ways. In doing so, their personalities and attitudes also draw a close parallel with their determination.

Both are adventurous, as Robert was brave enough to venture out into the world, while Victor was courageous enough to take a step ahead and attempt hands-on practicals. Both are also very determined. Even when faced with challenges, they managed to find solutions to their problems and solve them with ease. They also have an unhealthy obsession with their passion, with Robert wanting to explore the world, and Victor wanting to learn more about science.

1. When someone mentions something being parallel to something else, it makes me think of two objects following a similar and steady path, but yet these two paths are completely adverse and opposite in nature. This characteristic helps me broaden my mind and allow me to realise that sometimes life has a plan for us and that people can go through very different experiences but they may possibly have similar outcomes or learning lessons.

(4) Similarities

They both strive to discover and explore

Robert
He pitches himself against nature in search for a new northern sea passage. He hopes to enable humanity to have greater control over nature through doing this. He seeks to find happiness and satisfaction through the concept of adventure and claiming control.

Victor
Victor is fascinated by the prospects of science, and he becomes obsessed with the idea of the ‘secret of life’. He went away from his family and had to travel himself to various locations in order to acquire sufficient knowledge and abilities for the purpose of creating a creature which he had desired to bring to life soon enough.

They both treasure family immensely

Robert
Robert addresses all 4 of his letters to his Sister and hopes of updating her on his situation and giving her peace. He includes much details in his letters and he uses the power of language to express his feelings of affection and longing for his sister. He constantly checks on her well being and makes sure that she is doing good without him.

Victor
Victor talks about his Father, Sister and brothers in much detail throughout the chapters. He expresses his love for all of them and says how grateful he is for all of them. He always goes back to the concept of family whenever he feels lost or in need. He seeks comfort from them and he suffers greatly when he harms them.

Differences

This final decision is what shows the major difference in the two characters: Walton is able to learn from Victor's mistake, while Victor was never able to repair his life and make amends. Instead, he became obsessed with revenge. Walton will not follow Victor into that destructive state.

(5) Music

Victor
- Got It Bad by Leisure
- all the good girls go to hell by Billie Eilish

Robert
- Breathe me by Sia
- Get myself together by Robyn

Both men are smart however lack wisdom.

Differences

Unlike Victor, Robert had someone to tell him to stop, to think with his head and stop following his desire for power. Victor had been sucked too deep into the black hole to get out, in the end he wanted revenge instead of fixing his problems. He ran away instead of facing them. Similar can be said of the use of parallelism in literature and film.

Parallelism often appears in the form of similar character arcs, actions taken by characters, etc. This repetition draws attention to these elements. When two characters are parallels of each other, readers might have a better understanding of the motivations of one of them.
