When seeking ABA approval, the first step for Paralegal programs is to send in a comprehensive self-study to show the Bar Association how they meet their standards. This report includes: curriculum, faculty qualifications, student services, etc.

On-site Evaluation

The next step is for an ABA representative(s) to visit the program in person so they may assess the program and its strengths, as well as if it meets the Bar's standards for approval. They do this by observing the program's workings and talking to faculty and students.

Standing Committee

After the on-site evaluation, the findings are given to the ABA's Standing Committee. They then review these findings and sends a recommendation to the ABA Council if everything seems in order.

Lastly, the ABA Council makes their final decision and either approves the program or decides it doesn't meet their standards. If they are approved, then regular reviews of the program will be performed to make sure they are able to keep their ABA approval.

In my opinion I believe that ABA accreditation is really important for a program looking to cement itself as a trusted and recommended Paralegal program. For students, they are seeking programs and schools that will allow them to learn from those the ABA considers professionals and beneficial for future legal work. For institutions, ABA approval means their program will get far more students applying to said program and paying to partake in this program. Lastly for future employers, seeing a candidate that has attended an ABA approved program shows that they have proper and effective training in the legal field and would be an asset to their firm or other place of employment.
