However, it means much more than the definition of the dictionary in real life. Compassion is a hardcore value in the medical care. It is one of the six NHS constitution, which all the employees who work for NHS  should carry this value when helping the patient and their relatives not only health care profession.

In NHS strategy——Compassion in Practice, compassion contain 6Cs, which are Care, Compassion, Competence, Communication, Courage, and Commitment. (NHS England and Nursing Directorate, 2013), it indicated the way of how NHS employees can achieve compassion. Through showing the care when communicating, do the job as best as they can and brave to bear the duty.

We believe we all had compassion since birth, it is one of the human nature. Why we believe so is because of we all pursuit for the best, for the inner beauty and goodness of ourselves. However, most of us seldom reveal this value as we may not know how to do so when we are interacting with each other. But actually, compassion can be achieved by some small action that usually we may not be noticed. For instance, a smile and a greeting. Furthermore, we think compassion is the power to strive for improvement. What it means is that when we have compassion, the caring and positive attitude in our mind will motivate us to do better, to enhance our knowledge in order to provide a better care to the patients and to reflex on our past experience to put right to the weaknesses. Hence, it is a necessary value for the health care professionals.

Why is it important to the patient?

As the case has been shown that many people had died needlessly 
from being left without nurses, it is obviously important related to lives. 
the value can be providing clinical care and including alleviating pain,
distressing and making people feel valued. Compassion is the first value that NHS concers (NHS Office of London Clinical Commissioning Groups, 2018.)

In the case, the nurses applied compassion. The patient had cancer and his life remaining time was short. The nurses fulfilled the patient’s last wishes by helping him to recall his life memory and meet some important people in his life. The nurse considered the patient’s spiritual well being. Therefore, it can show commitment, courage, communication and competence which are the strategy of compassion in practice. In commitment, the nurses achieved a hospice’s wishes. In courage, the nurses were willing to organise the visits and resource for the patient who might face lots of obstacles. In communication, the nurses needed to have good communication skills to communicate with patient and the patient’s important people. In competence, the nurses had to transfer patient carefully and the nurses need to be very skilled. At last, the relatives of the patient were very grateful for what the nurses did.

Why is it important to the patient?
 

The patient’s last wishes were fulfilled, the patient might not feel regret to his life. It is because the patient is a hospice and he could complete all his wishes before he passes away, so the patient has a delightful life. Also, it is benefit to the relatives of the patient because they did not have to worry about the patient and they are glad that the patient has no regret for his life. 

How did the NHS staffs show compassion in the case?

Within these six vanguard areas, the care homes worked more closely with the NHS, local authorities, the voluntary sector and families. It provides nurses, occupational therapist and volunteers directly to the care homes in order to give out primary, community and secondary, social care to the needed. Furthermore, the NHS also used the way of Instant Messaging and hotline to keep an eye on the condition of the patient.

Why is the compassion so important to the patient?

The Care Home Vanguards Projects helps the old people to suffer less as they do not need to go to the GP appointments or hospital to get the health services since they may have difficulties in movement and it would become a torture to they if they need to travel a long distance in a weekly bases. The Care Home Vanguards Projects also shows the improvement of the services provided by NHS as they understand the situation of people who live in care homes and tried their best to improve the service to let the patient feels more comfortable.

In this case, we can see compassion because Lesley showed courageous. It is because Michael was cared at hospice and he did not feel comfortable about it. Then, Lesley suggested that to let Michael had treatment at home, so he would feel more comfortable. Lesley was braved to let Michael had treatment which may cause trouble to hospital. But Lesley was willing to organize a better solution for Michael. This help the patient to face the difficulty.

 

The nurse, Lesley, showed full of care to the patient, Michael. Michael got a stomach cancer and Lesley had stayed with Michael until the patient passed away. Lesley comforted Michael to let him be feel less anxious to the treatment and this let Michael felt better. Not only did Lesley take care Michael, but also, she cared about Michael’s family. Lesley stayed with Michael’s family when he passed away. She supported Michael’s family like to let them knew about Michael was passed away and the family could live independently now. It is an evident that Lesley showed competent care for the patient and family. Lesley contributed a lot of care to the patient and his family which could let them have a better life.
