Character Development: This event is character development as because of Anja's death, Vladek's personality changes drastically.

Summary: Anja dies, and Vladek changes dramatically.
Quote: "But for me it brought so much memories of Anja...Of course, I'm thinking always about her anyway... What do I have to do, Mala? In the garbage put them? of you also I have a photo on the desk." (104)
Explanation: When Anja died, Vladek was completely changed. Even more so when he went through the war and the Holocaust. Once she died, he became bitter at everyone, and even more negative. He began to stop being compassionate and started becoming pessimistic. This happened because he loved her and cared for her very much. However, once she dies, all of those emotions were flipped. In the end, Vladek became bitter and pessimistic once Anja died, but only because of his sadness in loosing her.

September 10, 1939 Vladek gets captured by the Germans as war prisoners but chooses to go to a labor camp instead for more food and better housing.

Character Development: This event is a character development event as being captured and set to work affected both his mental and physical attributes.

Summary: Vladek and the rest of the Polish soldiers who fought against the Germans are captured by the Germans, and he, along with the other Jews are separated from the other war prisoners, then put to work. However, he and a few others choose to go to a different labor camp with harder labor, but more food and better housing.
Quote: "'It's ok-we'll help you when no one is looking.'
We tried to help, But- what do you think?-Some went back to the tents to freeze and to starve." (56)
Explanation: Vladek being captured and sent to a labor camp affected his character development. To begin with, he is set to work in environments that are completely foreign to him, therefore, he undergoes a change that helps him to support himself at the camps. He becomes witty, less emotional, and more physically strong. These were all necessary changes he had to undergo in order to survive. They would get just enough food to slowly starve, while their work load would be enough to totally drain them of their energy. While Vladek became harder and less prone to emotion, he was still compassionate enough to try and help others who had a harder time with the food and the work.

Turning Point: This event is a turning point as this event caused him, as well as many other Jews to go into hiding and change their lifestyles.

Summary: All the Jews were to get their passports stamped, but those who were old, had lots of children, or people without workcards were never seen again. However, Vladek, Anja, and their son were able to get onto the good side.
Quote: "Those with a stamp were let to go home. But there were very few Jews now left in Sosnowiec..." (91)
Explanation: This event affected Vladek and his family, as after this event, the Jews started being more targeted, and most were killed on sight. Because of this, he sent his son away in order to save him, but he ended up dying. Afterwards, he and Anja had to hide with other Jews just in order to survive. They also had very little food available to them. This caused Vladek to become more cautious about what they did, where they went, and who they interacted with. He also became more resourceful as he had to take every chance to get more food and space.
