Her parents were Leona née Edwards, a teacher, and James McCauley, a carpenter. She grew up on a farm with her grandparents, mother, and younger brother Sylvester. At around the start of the 20th century, the former Confederate states had adopted new laws that deprived black voters the right to vote. Segregation of public areas was put in place too, this included busses. Bus and train companies enforced seating policies with separate sections for blacks and whites. In 1932, Rosa married Raymond Parks. On Thursday, December 1, 1955, Rosa boarded the Cleveland Avenue bus. she sat down in a row of seats reserved for blacks. after all the other white seats filled up, more whites got on. since all of the seats were full, the bus driver made Rosa Parks move. she didn't move and the the white passengers complained that she wasn't moving. one of the men said, ", if you don't stand up, I'm going to have to call the police and have you arrested." She responded with, "You may do that." After her arrest, Parks became an icon of the Civil Rights Movement. She triggered the Montgomery bus boycott so that black people where not riding the buses. In the 1970s, Parks organized for the freedom of political prisoners in the United States. Her husband died of throat cancer on August 19, 1977, and her brother, her only sibling, died of cancer the November of that year.  she nursed her mother Leona through her final stages cancer and geriatric dementia until she died in 1979 at the age of 92. Parks co-founded the Rosa L. Parks Scholarship Foundation for college-bound high school seniors. In February 1987, she co-founded, with Elaine Eason Steele, the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self Development, an institute that runs the "Pathways to Freedom" bus tours which introduce young people to important civil rights and Underground Railroad sites throughout the country.
