Patients can be overwhelmed when in the hospital. As a result, the problem arises where patients do not know what is their plan of care. The patient becomes directly affected by not knowing what or why things are occurring. This may arise as confusion, anger, and or anxiety in the patient. This dissatisfaction can occur throughout the hospital stay and may continue at home after discharge. The patient needs to feel involved in his or her care plan and understand what is to occur next and why that action has been chosen. Always Events are events that should always occur to positively increase the patient's experience and help prevent confusion.

Always Events are the positive counter to Never Events. Always Events promote best practice by using patient-centered care and ensuring that elements of the patient's care are always accomplished. This includes addressing patients by their name, treating patients with respect, adequate access to food and drink, and getting the patient to the bathroom as soon as possible when needed (Davies, 2015).

The use of Always Events integrates the patient into planning by identifying what the patient deems is important. The use of Always Events helps enforce the staff's dedication to advocating for patient and family-centered care. As a result of using Always Events more patient-centered outcomes are accomplished (Foster, 2016).

Always Events help the patient experience by changing the way we provide care. Always Events promote patient and family-centered care by increased effective communication. Leaders must act as role models to encourage others to consistently use Always Events and by encouraging open discussion to promote progress and address setbacks (Hayward, Endo, & Rutherford, 2014).

The use of Always Events regarding the promotion of dignity in patients should be implemented by staff and into the nursing student curriculum. These actions include promoting respect, using courtesy, initiating feedback from patients and family, and reporting negative and poor aspects of care. This also includes remembering to monitor and take care of the patient's nutritional and hydration needs (Matiti, 2012).

Always Events may be time consuming when trying to concentrate on the various needs and requests for multiple difficult patients.

Nurses may have to go against superiors, coworkers, and or doctors when advocating for the patient. This may cause workplace distress.

Nurses will have to self-assess their beliefs when they do not align with the wishes of the patient to provide non-bias care.

The nurse helps facilitate healing for the patient through education, advocacy, protection, and prevention. One way the nurse currently uses Always Events to promote patient satisfaction is by providing change of shift report at the bedside. This includes the patient and introduces the patient to the incoming nurse. This improves the issue by allowing the patient to hear what has been happening and what is the plan of care. Another way the nurse uses Always Events to promote patient satisfaction is by explaining the indication for each medication as she administers it to the patient. This keeps the patient informed and safe. The many duties of the nurse promotes the safety and optimal health of the patient.

The nurse's role in Always Events is important because the nurse is one of the most active members of the patient's healthcare team. The nurse advocates for the patient by listening to his or her needs and creating patient-centered goals with the patient. The nurse observes both the patient's verbal and non-verbal behavior. The nurse works with the patient by providing care, administering with medications, and collaborating with other healthcare professionals in regard to the patient's care. The nurse educates the patient and keeps him or her involved and informed. The nurse's involvement will help improve patient satisfaction with Always Events by creating consistency in care and reducing patient anxiety through open communication.
