Radar Truck

This is a picture of inside the radar truck in Hawaii during Pearl Harbor. They could detect the planes but by the time the message reached Pearl Harbor, it was too late and the attack had already started.

Aircrafts

This is an image of one of the aircraft that bombed Pearl Harbor that day. Japan led these planes and dropped bombs in the water that shot into our military ships. They traveled 200 miles to Pearl Harbor which was considered a breakthrough for plane technology at the time.

USS Arizona

This was the USS Arizona, it was the largest ship at Pearl Harbor and in the whole Navy fleet. It was sunk on December 7th and was turned on its side losing the lives of 1,177 people. It still sits at the bottom of the harbor and is the main vocal point of the memorial.

Oahu Island

The Japanese flew over the Oahu island to get to Pearl Harbor. They flew low and through the mountains so they were undetectable by the radar truck set up around the island. This was the main reason why it was such a surprise to those in the harbor, because they got no warning whatsoever.

Pearl Harbor Memorial

This is an image of the memorial for Pearl Harbor that stands in Hawaii today. It commemorates all of those who lost their lives at Pearl Harbor, as well as all of those who lived through that terrible day. It rests in the middle of the harbor and stands right above the remains of the USS Arizona.

80th Ceremony

This is a photo from the 80th-anniversary ceremony for Pearl Harbor. This shows a couple of the survivors that attended and that were honored. This ceremony was held on December 7, 2021.

Artifact

This is an image of an artifact from Pearl Harbor. It is a life preserver flotation device from the ship the USS West Virginia. The Kendrick family donated it to the West Virginia Regional History Center.

Newspaper

This is a Newspaper's front cover after the tragedy of Pearl Harbor this was released that same day on December 7, 1941, right after the USS Arizona had been hit. At that time they only knew of 7 people that were dead but obviously, later it was found out that many more than that had passed.

Mitsuo Fuchida

This is Misuo Fuchida and he was a Japanese captain for the Naval Air Service. He was responsible for leading the first wave of bombers at pearl harbor. He was also responsible for entire coordination of the entire aerial attack.

Doris Miller

This is Doris Miller he was a mess attendant for the USS West Virginia on the day of the Pearl Harbor Attack. He rose up to the challenge that day and was able to shoot down a plane as well as aid many of the injured. Afterward, he was up for many medals despite never really being apart of the navy.

Memorial Wall

This is an image of a wall inside the National Memorial for Pearl Harbor. This wall is a memorial for the USS Arizona where many people died. It lists the names of all of the known members who passed on December 7, 1941, on the USS Arizona.

Hinomaru

A Hinomaru is the red dot you see on this airplane. It was seen on all of the aircraft that bombed Pearl Harbor that day. It represents the Japanese flag and means "the circle of the sun".

Nurses

This is an image of many of the nurses who helped to aid the wounded during Pearl Harbor. They helped so much that day and saved so many lives. Because it was such a surprise attack many of them where not on duty but as soon as they saw what happened they all rushed to go and help those in need.

Husband E. Kimmel

This is Admiral Kimmel commander in chief of the US Naval Pacific Fleet. He was labeled a "scapegoat" for the Pearl Harbor attack. After the attack, he reverted his rank to Rear Admiral and then later retired in 1942.
