Giotto's actual birth date is unknown. It is estimated that he was born in 1266, 1267, or 1276. Because Giotto's birth year is not confirmed, the ten year difference between the possible dates was very important in creating and assessing his early development and important to Giotto's great works.

As a child, Giotto drew incredible sketches and drawings of animals on stone slab. These drawings included a sketch of a sheep he was tending. This drawing was so breathtaking that the foremost painter of the day, Cimabue, was so amazed that he took young Giotto as an apprentice. Giotto became inspired by Cimabue's art work and constantly increased in his art skills while working with Cimabue. Giotto learned lots of things he knew about art from his mentor, but he also gained knowledge from sculptor Nicola Pisano. Nicola succeeded in many outstanding things including the true revival of expression image in art of the new humanity and classical ideas. The help and information Giotto learned from Nicola had been powerful and helped Giotto put real thought into his artwork and the meanings of each piece. In Giotto's early life he learned his skills starting at a young age to help him achieve and accomplish big things in his future.
("Giotto')
("Giotto Artist")

Giotto was responsible for three principle works in Rome. They are the fresco fragment of Boniface VIII Proclaiming the Jubilee, in San Giovanni in Laterano (St. John Lateran), over the entrance to St. Peter’s; the altarpiece painted for Cardinal Stefaneschi and the great mosaic of Christ Walking on the Water (the Navicella). Giotto is also known to have painted some frescoes of old Saint Peters in the choir, but these paintings are now lost.
(Murray)
("Giotto")
(Gowing)
