As a result, he was shot in the lower left jaw by a Russian soldier on March 6, 1940. When he was found by soldiers, his lower face was shattered, but he was not dead. The war ended with the peace treaty declared on March 13, the day he came to his senses. After this incident, a rumor spread that he died due to the injuries he received. He underwent long treatments and surgeries in Jyväskylä and Helsinki. Shortly after the war, Häyhä was promoted to the rank of corporal and then to the rank of second lieutenant by Field Marshal Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim. Never before in Finnish Military history has anyone been promoted so quickly.
