In "Set and Monitor Goals," research by Comings, Perella, and Soricone (1999) suggests that teachers help students "write positive goal statements to make the goal tangible" and "create a goal plan that includes interim steps and deadlines toward achieving each step." Many of my students say that their goal is to get their GED, but I'm realizing that this goal needs to be broken down into smaller goals to make it attainable and realistic.

My organization uses a goal-setting model called Goal 4 It by Mathematica (https://www.mathematica.org/solutions/goal4-it). I think SMART goals are a complement to this model's focus on "core regulation skills," a similar idea to Zimmerman's concept of "self-regulated learners" (1989) from the article.
