The government raised money by taxing goods brought into the colonies. The Sugar Act of 1764 taxed goods like sugar, coffee, and cloth. The British taxed them because they were out of money because of the French and Indian war. The colonist protested and were upset about the tax and they started to smuggle it instead of pay a tax for it. The picture shows the upset colonist protesting about the tax act

Olive Branch Petition

The Olive Branch Petition was the last attempt to the British to not go to war. Colonists wrote this to basically say they are loyal to the British and wanted their rights as British Citizens. John Dickinson wrote it. The reason it didn’t work was because in it colonists were explaining how they were supposedly loyal to the crown but refused to follow British authority and rules. The result is the British didn’t like how the colonists responded and wanted to punish the rebellions happening in the Americas. This picture is a picture of the document.

Common Sense was a pamphlet written by Thomas Paine in 1776. It was the first time succession from Britain was realistically considered. It immediately went ‘viral’ in the colonies and to this day it is the all time best selling piece of American literature. It created a nation-wide patriotic surge.
