┊cha doyoon was born, the oldest son of cha sihu and byun mari in seoul, south korea. both of his parents hailed from the small town of gohyang but eventually moved to seoul for plans of a better life. his father was a carpenter and furniture designer by profession, handling a small furniture shop in hongdae, frequented by young couples and middle aged adults. he was an ex-architect who eventually branched out from designing furniture to designing homes for high profile clients. the family had money and stable income from both parents. it was a happy childhood for him for a few years.

┊doyoon has never vocalized this to anyone but his brother, but he deeply resents his mother for ruining their supposed picture perfect family. he was old enough to understand what was going on during the divorce and, even if doyoon is slow to hate anyone (save for his bullies later in life), he despised his mother and half-brother for breaking the illusion of the family he wanted. he lived with her for a big chunk of his life in seoul but he almost felt numb living with her, only staying with her so she wasn't all alone raising his two brothers. he only deeply cared for his younger full-brother and that's why he stayed. his mother wasn't that much of a mother to him, but he just wanted to help in his own way. he always knew and wanted to stay with his father for the rest of his life.

┊even with him being acutely aware of his hatred and eventual indifference to his mother, his terrible but well-hidden self-esteem and body image issues stemmed from whatever little relationship they had. too early did doyoon feel like he was invisible to her. for a few years she was caring for his infant half-brother, and he had to be both sibling and pseudo-father to dohwan. thankless work that she never acknowledged, yet he wished to be seen by her, and later on everyone else, in a positive light. now his self-image was great in a semi-shallow sense, now being handsome (in south korean societal standards) and talented to many of his peers and online fans. even his father and friends were supportive, but there was an empty chamber of his heart that he refused to fill, only because it required for him to get closure with his other parent.

   ⤷ people called doyoon by his nickname, t-rex, or rex for short, during his time in hongik university. many people think that this was just bestowed upon him, but doyoon was actually the secret originator of his nickname. he created it as an alias for his youtube channel and it stuck, so he decided to use it as his "college" name since he would have a clean slate there.

   ⤷ he has a serious phobia of eagles, but only eagles. other birds are fine, as long as they are not eagles. as a child, he was actually attacked by an eagle that was temperamental and accidentally got out of its enclosure in the zoo. said eagle was the reason doyoon had two thin scars on his right ear and one right below, on his neck.

┊doyoon’s younger brother, cha dohwan, was born. he looked similar to doyoon, a fairly equal mix of their parents. 3-year-old doyoon was a bit clumsy with his new infant brother, and only 2 years later was doyoon allowed to carry dohwan (with guidance from his father) because his first attempt resulted in dohwan’s head hitting the lowest cabinet in the house and both sons crying.

┊the earliest memories that doyoon could remember were from this year. it was still blurry just from time passing, but he could see vague images of playgrounds, a few of his childhood friends, as well as blurry scenes of forests and the sea. his family would have been spending time in gohyang for a few months each year (especially during the summer) to take breaks from their busy life in seoul. doyoon’s “summer friends” were solidified even at this age. technically being born and bred in seoul from the start, doyoon ended up adopting his parents’ yeongnam accents since they used it at home and even more when the pair would visit their hometown.

┊his mother was caught cheating on her father, something a child wouldn’t expect even if his mother seemed romantically disconnected from his father for a few years. her affair with her previous college flame resulted in an unplanned pregnancy. his father, as kind of a man as he is, couldn’t emotionally handle it, refusing to raise a son that was the product of his wife’s infidellity. cha sihu and byun mari eventually divorced on civil terms, having joint custody. by this time, doyoon already had a younger brother, so his mother would have to take care of him and his newly-born half brother. doyoon being the reliable oldest that he is, didn't want to leave his mother, he helped her raise his two younger siblings even if he despised her. his father on the other hand, heartbroken by his mother's actions, moved back to gohyang in hopes of restarting his life and continuing his furniture business-related dreams. doyoon unfortunately had to stay with his mother for most of his school life up until the middle of his second year of high school. during the summer he would stay with his father in gohyang every year until his high school graduation.

┊even with a kind father to guide him and be supportive of doyoon’s natural talents, the oldest cha son managed to get a serious taste of school bullying in seoul, as well as summer bullying in gohyang. he was unlucky enough to not pass the pre-teen boy standard of handsome, being scrawny and physically weak and cursed with terrible eyesight and a mild overbite. these weren’t flaws to him or his father, the latter being endlessly supportive, but doyoon started seeing fault in himself as he was constantly made fun of for his looks. the bullying during his school days was much worse, half the time during breaks he would be locked in bathrooms or in empty classrooms, or have paint, dirty water, or anything spilled on him "by accident." even if his goofy and playful personality and niche interests were enough to gain him real friends, he had done nothing but look a certain way and that made him an easy target for the bullies. he had attempted to bring up his school problems with his mother, but she was far too busy caring for his half-brother and co-parenting with the latter’s father. the only support doyoon had were his friends in gohyang, his tight knit friends in seoul, but most of all his younger brother, cha dohwan.

┊entering high school had given doyoon more room to explore his interests, a major one being dancing. it had been a few years of him wearing braces and they were set to come off by the end of the schoolyear. that along with him getting into dancing and performing, he realized he was more comfortable getting physically fit through dancing than any sport he attempted to join from peer pressure. he managed to gain new friends in his school’s dance club, some of them being idol trainees at that age. with regular visits to gohyang and having better social footing in seoul, he was starting to feel more comfortable in his skin. of course he was still bullied, so being in the dance club and even going to after-school dance lessons were his escape. he realized years ago that his home was not enough of an escape if his mother was barely supportive of him, only giving bare minimum support.

she had provided shelter, but doyoon had been actively cooking his own food, washing and ironing his own clothes, keeping his room and the rest of the house tidy, even taking up part-time jobs just so he wouldn’t ask his mother for anything.

at some point she realized her son’s view of her changed and had given up on being a mother to him. doyoon just desired self-sufficiency so that he would have little to worry about once he left his house in seoul.

a desire he wouldn’t ever acknowledge was that he wanted to be seen by his own parent. with his walls up and her emotional detachment towards the two cha brothers was a bad combination that was meant to happen since the day she cheated.

┊doyoon started posting dance covers on youtube, giong semi-viral in south korea for his dance cover of shinee’s everybody. it had been posted under an alias, rex 렉스, so that his classmates wouldn’t find it easily. he was thankful that his low-quality phone camera couldn’t fully catch his face and only his dance club friends knew about it. months after his viral video, he gained courage to start posting original choreography, calling them rexdance videos, which he does for fun. doyoon managed to gain a following with his original choreography and his k-pop covers. another viral video came from his dancing to dbsk’s mirotic. in the middle of the schoolyear, his parents had come to an agreement that doyoon would finish the rest of his high school years in gohyang, and he couldn’t be happier moving in with his father. he continued posting videos once or twice a month while in gohyang.

┊with his channel, still under an alias, gaining more fans, doyoon wanted to take an active part in improving its image. he had been the only one handling it since the beginning, and he still felt discomfort watching himself dance. his personal view of himself was not aligned with his fans’ pov. he still saw the skinny nerd with glasses and a bad overbite in every video, so he decided to do more research in order to up his physical health and gain muscles for aesthetic purposes. everyone in his dance team had sufficient muscle to dance well, but doyoon initiated his own glow-up for an audience and for himself. after almost a year of extra exercise, watching what he ate and even doing better beauty and skin routines, doyoon became quite close to what people would call an idol standard of handsome. this continued on until his university days.

┊doyoon growing up always seemed like a silly younger clone of his father, with how much they had in common. they were both extremely creative people right off the bat, who loved building things from scratch (whatever it may be), so doyoon, inspired by his father and his hardwork, decided to take up woodworking and furniture design in hongik university in seoul. he finished with flying colors and a great set of friends and connections, but he decided against starting his own shop in seoul and decided to help his father build his furniture empire in gohyang first. from he would occasionally visit his mother and younger brothers in seoul, but would always come home from the college dorms to his dad. this was the closest he had felt to emotional freedom since he didn’t need to go back to his mother anymore.

┊into his first year doyoon was already looking great, his father paying for tuition and helping him get contacts as a christmas gift before entering the university. for the first time in his life, doyoon had somewhat of a blank slate socially. none of his bullies attended his classes, he was looking fitter than ever, and he was actually getting attention that was positive and that he could feel. his youtube channel gained even more followers, and he was proud to say who he was whenever he went to class. he went by doyoon or rex during this period, and he was quite popular with his classmates even if he felt a bit awkward about it. the positive reinforcement from the people around him was new and alien, but he looked happy.

┊riding the local fame he had in school from his youtube channel as well as his looks, doyoon felt like he was on top of the world. he deeply missed his friends from gohyang though, his time with them was short even if he went back for longer weekends and the summer months. with encouragement from his hongik friends, he started a tiktok account to reach a wider audience. tiktok had boomed in popularity, and doyoon was one of the first major players in the south korean side. his tiktok evolved from just doing dance trends and promoting snippets of his covers and choreography, to full blown stunts bordering on dangerous and other trends like cooking new weird foods and silly memes. it was still not enough for him, deep down.

┊after an accident from one of his planned online stunts, doyoon ended up in the hospital nearby hongik university, with him in a neck brace and a dislocated shoulder. his youtube video and tiktok plans, as well as his studies, were put on hold for a few months. thankfully his remaining classes could be done online those were never a problem for him as he was doing well in his design-related classes, his only issue was from emotions lingering the week of the incident. when he was rushed to the hospital, the doctors called both of his parents but his wretched mother arrived first. his father arrived days later from a convention abroad. his stressed neck muscle and injured shoulder were nothing compared to her trying to be a mother to him again. doyoon had no choice but to endure her trying to get close to him emotionally, all because he was physically confined to a hospital bed.

months after his release from the hospital, he discovered from his younger brother (who was still living with her) that their mother was deeply in debt and was trying to get closer to doyoon and his father, both of them being in better situations financially. that day doyoon felt sick to his stomach, worse than the feeling when he dislocated his shoulder. at that point he made it his goal to use his online income and eventual income from carpentry and furniture construction to get his brother dohwan out of their mother’s house and back with him and their dad in gohyang.

┊it’s doyoon’s graduating year, and he managed to juggle mild local internet and social media fame with his studies. he had many to thank but his father, who was an alumni not just from hongik but from the exact same program doyoon took, had the most to be thanked for. during the summers when doyoon would return to gohyang, his father was his mentor by letting his son handle projects in his already existing furniture shop, pocha furnitures. after graduation, doyoon packed up everything and went all-in to help his father with the business. in two years, they expanded to construction and carpentry as their clientele grew, being composed of gohyang natives and some of cha sihu’s past clients from seoul. his son being an online influencer definitely helped with the business marketing too.

┊being part of his father’s well-established business and reunited with his friends in the small town, it seems that things are going well for doyoon. his tiktok has been keeping up with trends, while his youtube channel was less active. at peak fitness and appearance, doyoon’s internet celebrity status kept him steady in doing his near life-threatening stunts and comedy skits for his online accounts. all he had to worry about was his day job and his online work and possibly any incoming allergic reactions because he lived in a cat town and with a cat allergy.

   ⤷ kang seoah had been doyoon's closest and earliest friend, her mother and his father being childhood friends in their hometown. they basically grew up together especially during the summers and had only gotten closer as time passed.

   ⤷ doyoon's handwriting isn't amazing nor terrible, but it was miles better than his best friend seoah's. every time seoah would send him heartfelt notes when they were kids, doyoon had to squint even with his glasses on because her penmanship was impossible to decipher. seoah's mother was used to it and eventually became doyoon's translator until both friends were given smartphones to text each other with.

   ⤷ he practices conversations in the mirror and spends a good hour before bed just walking around his bedroom having hypothetical conversations that he thinks could happen in the future. this habit became more pronounced once he moved in with his father as he felt more comfortable in his dad's house than his mom's. he has been caught many times talking to himself by his father, who early on was concerned but accepted his son was a bit of a weirdo like he is.

   ⤷ doyoon's father is relentlessly supportive, to a fault, and a little naive to modern ideas that he wasn't exposed to as a young adult. seeing that his son had never really brought a girl home or even talked about one aside from his gohyang friends, seoah the most, cha sihu genuinely thought his son was gay. not wanting to confront his oldest directly, cha sihu did some research on his own and tried having the "sexuality talk" with his very very very heterosexual son. sometimes when doyoon's doing a "silly tiktok thing" like dressing up in ken's cowboy outfit from the barbie movie or doing a dance trend usually meant for girls, his father would pull him aside.

"you're really not gay, son?" sihu asked with genuine concern in his eyes as he sits his son down at the dinner table for the nth time.

"dad, no!"

"you're sure? because you're showing many signs that i saw online and–"

"dad, i promise i am straight, but gay and bisexual people are fine too. it's just not me." doyoon interjected, sighing because this kept on happening.

"okay, understood." sihu looked mildly disappointed as his research and blind support was for nothing. there was a brief pause between the two cha men.

"i will support any choices you make in life, as long as it's you, okay doyoon?"

"oh my god."

his dad only had shallow knowledge of this world but still wants the best for his son.
