I will research Stanislavski and his techniques. I will talk about how I have used Stanislavski’s techniques within my performance presentation. I will also talk about the decisions we have made and why we made them and I will look at the good points and the points that could be better.

Stanislavski adopted the stage name Stanislavski but his real name was Konstantin sergeyevich alexeyev. He was born in 1863 and he died in 1938. He was born in Russia and his family was quite an affectionate warm family that seemed middle/upper class. Stanislavski’s family loved the theatre, which maybe made him want to be part of a theatre.
Our Ideas for the presentation partWe brainstormed our ideas. We decided that for the research in our presentation we would have Dan in the studio as a news reporter and then I am on the other side of the stage and I am the outside reporter in Stanislavski’s studio. We thought this would be a good way of doing it because you’ve got him in the studio giving information about Stanislavski and then you’ve got me when he talks to me through the cameras giving facts about Stanislavski too. I think it makes it more interesting for the audience because there are two different parts of the performance and I think it is much better than just doing a presentation that could get boring. Tis way we want to make it be more exciting and interesting and keep their attention.

Blood Brothers - performance

For my piece I am working with Daniel Lucking. We have chosen a script to do from blood brothers. I am Edward Lyons and he is mickey Johnson. The one he is playing is more bad mannered and badly dressed and badly educated because he is from a poor family. Edward is adopted by a rich family so he is educated dressed smart and brought up well. The are two brothers that got split up at birth and they went there separate ways to two different family’s one that is poor and one that is rich. When they first meet up they just become friends and don’t know that they are brothers. We are going to perform our script in the style of Stanislavski and have a news report to put in the information about Stanislavski.

Magic If

‘The ‘magic if’ simply involves an actor putting him/herself in the character’s shoes within a certain scenario and asking the question ‘how would I react if this happened to me?’’ (www.dramaclasses.biz, 2017)

The Magic If helps you become a character you have to imagine you are them and think about what you would do if you were them.

In my performance I am an 8 year old boy called Edward Lyons. I need to become the character that is in the performance and take on the role of being him and feel like I actually am an 8 year old boy. I remember when I was a kid and what I was like and I try to put it into practice. This is using the magic if.

I think it is hard to play someone if you don’t try to actually be that person. I think it works if you think about what you would do if you were that character. In rehearsals it has been useful in some ways to use the magic if. It has been useful to try and get into the character. It is hard to try and think what I would do as an 8 year old when I am 40. I can do it but it takes a lot more had work.

The forth wall

The forth wall is basically a see through wall that the audience watch through. It makes the audience feel like they are watching a show and it makes it more realistic.

The forth wall is ‘the space which separates a performer or performance from an audience.’ (Google dictionary)

In our performance of blood brothers it is like the audience are not there it is just me and him talking to each other like in real life. We don’t push the audience away but we don’t talk to the audience. So we are using the forth wall by keeping the audience separate from the performers.

I think the forth wall works because I can cut out the audience and concentrate on my show better. I think it works when Dan and me use it because it is what Stanislavski would have done.

Dan speaks through the forth wall during the presentation part which I don’t think is a very good idea. I think we should have tried to keep it with the firth wall there with just me and him. I think we could still do a news report but like the audience are watching it from a TV.

Emotion Memory

Characterisation is where the actor becomes a character. Stanislavski wanted his characters to be real and to become the characters. He also wanted the actors to feel what the character feels.

‘He wanted his actors to actually feel the emotion. So, if a scene called for extreme grief, actors needed to put themselves in the mindset of the character's situation so that they genuinely experience the feelings of intense sadness. (The same goes for all the other emotions.)’ (www.thoughtco.com)

In the bit we perform from blood brothers we are getting to know each other and trying to become friends and find out things about each other. The emotion I think my character feels is excitement because they are talking to each other and finding out about each other. Edward will be polite and friendly so this is what I need to do. I try and feel the emotion of excitement and happy when I get to know him. I think about things that are good that have happened in my life to get me to show this.

I think when you think about things that have happened to you it helps with your emotions. It helps because if you think of happy or sad things from in the past it brings back the memories and makes you feel happy or sad. It makes the character come alive because you are that character once you have got the emotions.

We look at some of the technics that Stanislavski uses and the way he dos things Dan then showed me some different ways of doing things. He then turned our presentation in to a news report and we work on this he was in the newsroom and I was at Stanislavski’s studio then we started working on blood brothers who was who and the script and just started learning the lines we did Thursdays some Fridays as Dan did not come in very much which made it so very hard for me I found my self with not much I could do so one week when he did not come in and rosy was on her own we help each other with our lines going thou it a few times.

Tech & Dress

We did not really have any dress and tech as I said Dan did not come in very much so we did not get too sort out dress and get the tech done which made me very upset as I wanted that done as more of a better show and performance so did not go as well as I hoped it would and I feel that if Dan had come in like he should of we could of done so much better and learned our lines.

If we had done dress I would like us to of worn some childrens style clothes to make it more realistic because this is what Stanislavski would have done. For my character I think he would have worn some smart clothes and for Dans character would wear t-shirt and shorts, just normal kids stuff.

For lighting I would want some coloured lights and maybe some spotlights on us when we were making friends. We also would be good if we had lights on Dan in th news room then light on me at Stanislavski studios.

We had a presentation with slides but Dan changed this at the last minute which I was not happy about. I was furious that I had done all that work on the presentation for nothing. I think my grade would be better if the research was there.

My evaluation of our presentation and show I feel that every thing was going ok at the start and then Dan stop making it in to university that’s when things started going bad as I needed him here to go over what we will do and rehears lines and all that will happen in our show so we ended up doing our show at 430pm Tuesday after level 5 did there ones it was hard as we did not have any dress and not much tech but we got on with it. like they say in show business ( the show must go on ) so we got up there and did our presentation and show the presentation went ok but the show was not as good as it could have been so I do feel really upset that it did not go as well as it should of due to the days Dan did not come in but we did it all and hope it’s a pass I really would like more than a pass as it was not my fault that Dan was not in but if I have to take just a pass at lest it’s a pass not fail in the next show I really think I will be a lot better off if I am in a different group as I am real worried that if I am with Dan again it could happen all over and I don’t think I could deal with that again it was very stressful and upsetting for me and the others. I am not able to learn lines quickly but other Dan can learn them after reading it just one or two times so him not being there for me to practice meant that he knew his lines and I needed cue cards to help me. I often need to use cue cards but I had to use them more than I wanted and I did not feel confident in my performance. The good points I was able to use some Stanislavski technuqes in my performance. These were when you have the forth wall, being the character and feeling the emotions and the magic if which is when you ask yourself what you would do if you was them. The bad points Well as you know Dan did not turn up very much so for me the bad points are not have lots of time to learn lines and rehears and look into what dress we need so we had no dress or much tech like the other s did as they turned up all the time so I really feel like I need to work with some of the others next time. What could be better next time?Well next time. 1. Starting to look into things straight away Look into how the actors performs so we can get a idea of what way we need to do it 2. Research the show and actors 3. Start putting things down and working out who is who and getting it onto paper 4. Print the script and start learning it and coming in even on days off so you don’t keep it to the last mint which could make a lot of stress and even cause the show to go wrong making you not even get a pass.
