 biotic factor-A biotic factor is a living organism that shapes its environment. In a freshwater ecosystem, examples might include aquatic plants, fish, amphibians, and algae. Biotic and abiotic factors work together to create a unique ecosystem.

abiotic factor-An abiotic factor is a non-living part of an ecosystem that shapes its environment. In a terrestrial ecosystem, examples might include temperature, light, and water. In a marine ecosystem, abiotic factors would include salinity and ocean currents

 niche-a niche is the match of a species to a specific environmental condition. It describes how an organism or population responds to the distribution of resources and competitors and how it in turn alters those same factors

predation-biological interaction where one organism, the predator, kills and eats another organism, its prey. It is one of a family of common feeding behaviours that includes parasitism and micropredation and parasitoidism.

 symbiosis- interaction between two different organisms living in close physical association, typically to the advantage of both.

Climate-the weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period.

Biomes- a large naturally occurring community of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat, e.g. forest or tundra.

Photic Zone- found below the photic zone, Permanently dark; more than 10,000 meters down

Primary succession happens from something like a volcanic eruption and takes longer to repair, and secondary succession happens from a natural event(like a fire).

The Competitive exclusion principle states that no two species can occupy the same niche in the same habitat at the same time.

Mutualism- in finding dory the plants that nemo and his dad hid in that dory could not get in because it stings her.
Commensalism- Fish that swim with sharks and the shark doesn't eat that type of fish.

  • How is an organism’s niche like an occupation? A niche is like an occupation because a niche is how an organism lives and the jobs that it performs, which is what an occupation is. 
  • What would happen to conditions on Earth if the concentration of greenhouse gases increased? The earth’s temperature would increase. 
  • How do predators affect the prey population? Predators eat prey and it affects the overall equilibrium of the food chain. As predators increase, prey decrease
  • Describe what would happen if two bird species tried to occupy the same niche. Use the term competitive exclusion principle in your answer. Competitive exclusion principle will occur because the birds won't try to move so they will have to compete. 
  • Explain the difference between weather and climate. Weather is short term (day-to-day), climate is long term changes (yearly average)
