Cocaine is a highly addictive drug that is a stimulant. It is made from coca leaves in South America. More than 100 years ago, purified chemical “cocaine hydrochloride” was extracted from the leaves and this became widely known as cocaine. This substance looks a lot like flour(fine white powder), and it was even used in the 1900s to treat many illnesses and even, for a short period of time, make Coca-Cola. However, after people found out that the drug was very addictive and can alter brain functions, they decided to ban all cocaine except for medical use. Like many other drugs, Cocaine is snorted. Snorting is the process in which one inhales the powder through the nose and letting it go into the bloodstream.

The coca plant originated from South America, in the jungles of Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, and other countries. In the past, people of these countries would chew coca leaves for nutrition and it’s stimulant effects. This is the first ever form of cocaine that is used like how it is used today. However, coca leaves contain very little cocaine(1 percent or so), and they do not cause the effects that they are notoriously known for today. These leaves and how they were chewed quickly got noticed by the European conquerors and word got out saying that it was a substance that can reduce hunger and sleepiness. After that, the coca leaves traveled across the atlantic ocean and reached the hands of 19th century scientists, who extracted the cocaine. This was the real cocaine, and it is tens to hundreds of times stronger than the leaf. This new substance caught the eye of doctors, one Austrian ophthalmologist to be exact. He used cocaine in an eye surgery and achieved groundbreaking success, making cocaine even more popular. As cocaine got fame in the medical field, its name also got out in the recreational field. There, people made drinks that contained cocaine and claimed that they were good for the body. The drink was even endorsed by famous people such as Thomas Edison, Ulysses S. Grant, and two popes.
