The Puritans believed in Puritanism which was the movement for reform. The Puritans wanted to rid the church of any catholic residue and to build upon the ideas of John Calvin. The Puritans left for the new world in 1620 and established the Massachusetts Bay Colony. They picked the wrong time of the year to go and were met with the harsh conditions of winter but the natives there helped them out by giving food and some shelter. Once the natives realized the Puritans were not leaving they started war with them and this was a reason that the Puritans believed in devils because of the way the natives looked while attacking them.

Beliefs of the Puritans

The Puritans believed in total depravity which was that all of mankind were sinners because of Adam and Eve. They believed in predestination which was a belief that people were part of the elect and the unregenerate, elect being going to heaven while unregenerate meaning you would go to hell. They believed that Christ died only for the elect and that you knew when you where part of the elect when you felt grace, the feeling of God's in an intense emotional fashion. The Puritans believed in a theocracy form of government which mixes the church and the state with power. This is no longer in today's society.

Causes of Witchcraft Hysteria in Salem

The causes of the hysteria was from their strong belief in the bible and that Satan was acting on the world. They believed that Satan recruited witches and wizards to work for him in the real world. They believed that a person who was a witch would show certain signs/symptoms. Since the Puritans were experiencing many troubles with the move over to the new world they blamed Satan for actively doing these things to them such as making people sick. At the time the Puritans did not have science to explain that they were getting sick because of all the new bacteria they were exposed to and the harsh winter conditions so they blames Satan for it.

The Salem Witch Trials

The Salem Witch Trials started in 1692 when one member of the town got really sick and that was when the talk of witch craft rose. A doctor was called and found nothing wrong physically but said that the causes were spiritually. Later on the girl and some friends said that a slave of the town named Tituba told them her voodoo stories and they said she cursed them. They them would go into contorted poses and complained about biting sensations. Anyone could accuse someone of being a witch and that would have the person being accused be thrown into jail. The trials were unfair because the girls there could of just acted this all out and there was no tangible evidence. By the end of 1692 over 200 people were jailed and 19 men and women were hung.

What the town Salem had

The town of Salem had very little when it came to things that killed time and boredom. Since one book was allowed in the town all the people could do was read the bible to kill time. The Puritans did not have any CD's, TV, or any form of the technology we have today. The Puritans only had their farms and each other to try and conquer their boredom with. Their lack of things to do and an excessive amount of time reading the bible was a reason that led some people to speculate of witches being in their town.
