Il y a un flambeaux, un bouclier, une bible ouverte, et un monde dans l'obscurité. Le bouclier de la foi est une arme défensive qui nous aide, nous les chrétiens à résister au mal. La Bible ouverte est la parole de la vie. Ceux qui croit de ce qu'est écrit dans la Bible auront la vie éternelle. Cela montre qu'il y a des chrétiens dans le monde et qu'il veulent que les non chrétiens croit en la parole de Dieu. Le monde dans l'obscurité désigne les non chrétiens, qu'ils sont plongés dans le mal. Le flambeaux répand autour de lui une vive lumière. Et que un jour les ténèbres auront de la lumière dans leurs vies.

En 1962, Claude Harel revient de deux années passées en Afrique. Au cours d'un séjour au Tchad, il a eu l'occasion de rencontrer des responsables d'un groupe de scouts évangélique : les ''Flambeaux et Lumières'' issus du ''Christian Service Brigade'' venu des Etats-Unis. Dès son retour en France, il transmet son enthousiasme à sa femme Claudie pour ce type de travail auprès de la jeunesse, chose rare à l'époque dans les Eglises évangéliques. Ils débutent alors un travail semblable en France pour les jeunes entre 11 et 15 ans. 
Au cours de l'année 1963, Claude réunit un groupe d'amis de France, de Suisse et de Belgique pour imaginer et expérimenter à quoi pourraient ressembler les Flambeaux. Le groupe de Strasbourg voit le jour au début de l'année 1964. En parallèle, les Flambeaux démarrent en Suisse. Dès l'année suivante Claude et Claudie Harel vont parcourir toute la France pour présenter leurs projets aux Eglises. Ensuite des mouvements Flambeaux ont été crée dans les 4 coins de la France.
