We think Mann wanted to formalize schools and put states in charge because he believed it would create uniformity and in his mind create equal opportunity for people of different backgrounds. Cons to this would be the assimilation he was trying to push and create. Another con would be the cost of this and the unrest the tax for schools caused.

-Erica, Addy, Abby, Julia

The majority of people in our society still belive that public schooling should help solve many of our world problems such as racial, religious or cultural injustices. Many also believe that through public education there should be resources for bullying, violence, and discrimination through systems like counseling and support groups. Most public schools also systems like free breakfast or lunch that is available to students with low income households which helps lessen the class conflict that our world faces. Many people belive that through education children can learn important skills and some use schooling as a replacement to education their children on their own.

Yes, we believe there are problems with Mann’s plan to end poverty through education. One issue is that not everyone has access to education, either because common schools were not established everywhere or because some families chose not to send their children due to personal beliefs or circumstances. Another problem is that even when individuals do receive an education, they must still be motivated to use it. Whether that means finding a job, earning money, or applying their skills in ways that actually help them get out of poverty. One last reason is that there needs to be jobs for all for these people with education to have, and get paid a livable wage for.

As a group, we thought that the children from different backgrounds may have been treated not necessarily with prejudice right away, but that the other school children were surprised. If they were being discriminated against, it was their choice whether they wanted to build a tolerance against it.

We think that moral education could stop some crimes to a certain extent. You will never be able to completely eliminate crime, there will always be people who continue to do what they want no matter the conscience and there will be people who commit crime out of necessity, like those who steal to provide for their families.
