Saint Vincent de Paul, a French Catholic priest who later dedicated his life and his time to helping the impoverished was born.

Early Life

He was the 3rd child of simple peasant farmers however from a young age seemed to have a talent in literacy and management. bouncing between universities and colleges in 1604 he got his bachelor degree in Theology from the University of Toulouse and later a licentiate in Canon Law from the University of Paris.

Capture & Enslavement (possibly false)

According to letter written by Saint Vincent de Paul himself in 1605 he was captured and later sold by Barbary pirates(Ottomans Muslim Pirates) He apparently was sold 3 times until finally in 1607 after 2 years spent in bondage he managed to escape in a boat across the Mediterranean sea to Aigues-Mortes back in France.

Experiences in Europe

After returning to France he traveled to Rome and in 1609 he was continuing his studies until he was sent on a mission by King Henry IV. He made the acquaintance of abbé Pierre de Bérulle, one of the most important french mystics of the 17th century and the founder of he took him as his personal spiritual advisor.

Though Saint Vincent de Paul was a easily angered person when was introduced to Canfield's "Rule of Perfection". He learned to be more sensitive and caring to others something that would cary on till the rest of his life.

Although Vincent had initially begun his priesthood with the intention of securing a life of leisure for himself, he underwent a change of heart after hearing the confession of a dying peasant.

These things among others shaped him to the man that he would become.

Saint Vincent de Paul's actions

. In 1617, Vincent contacted the Daughters of Charity who then introduced him to poor families. Vincent then brought them food and comfort. 

. He founded hospitals, and gathered relief funds for the victims of war and to ransom 1,200 galley slaves from North Africa.
