Question-Answer Relationships  (QAR) Defined
QAR question types, text based and those that require prior knowledge/ experience, can be used to differentiate reading questions by EL proficiency level.   Please know that any student, regardless of proficiency, is capable answer these questions, but some may require more scaffolding / sheltering than others.  

• Right There Questions:  Question whose answer is found directly in the text. They are usually 5-W type questions whose answers may contain words from the question.  Great for new/low-proficiency students and up.  
• Think and Search Questions:  Question whose answer is in different parts of the text.    Answers usually require that students summarize, compare/contrast, or explain information.   Great for low to intermediate proficient students and up.
• Author and Me Questions:  Question whose answer is not usually found in the text.  Student has to combine information from the text with information they already know.   Great for intermediate students and up.
• On My Own Questions:  Question whose answer is not in the text.  It is usually based on the student's opinion and experience with a topic relating to the text.  Great for upper intermediate and advanced proficiency EL students.
