Current Event Social Media Assignment - Brexit. by Brennan Murray

"Brexit", an abbreviation for British exit, refers to the shocking decision in June of 2016 for the UK to exit the European Union. Previously elected Prime Minister David Cameron faced much pressure from pro-exit UK Independence party as well as, members of his own party to hold a vote. Even though Cameron himself was against, he held a vote confident that the UK would be against the exit. This in turn backfired and the vote was in favor of the exit, leading to the immediate step down of David Cameron, enter Theresa May. Now one of the most disrespected political figures in the world, May faces even more pressure to step down and resign from her position as Prime Minister.

Seen in this video Dominic discusses the level of frustration that the British are facing as 5 million people have signed a petition for the cancellation of Brexit. As well, pointing out the current state of Democracy and that the government is shutting down all conversations regarding a new vote as the vote was already made in 2016. True democracy is the process of continuous engagement through conversation. He is displeased with the current government and along with 5 million others looks to at the very least hold a new vote as after two and half years much has changed.

This reflects the current state of Brexit as the European Union, displayed as the man in this short goes to let the UK out, but UK remains 2 and a half years later.

Seen in the video are hundreds of thousands flooding to Central London in protest of Brexit and in favor of a second referendum. The CNN reporter is seen in the heat of the March where if you listen you can hear someone is blaring the song I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) by the Proclaimers, which is highly appropriate. In itself, that shows the frustration of these residents "proclaiming they would walk 500 miles" to end this controversy over the UK exiting the European Union

In this video Theresa May speaks in reference to the 2016 Referendum where the Brits voted in favor of the separation to the European Union. She clearly speaks only to the original referendum and not the fact that United Kingdom residents are demanding a second referendum as they believe the first vote was not taken as seriously, as well, 2+ years have passed and much has changed. This video was posted today and has already garnered almost 50000 views.

The original post on YouTube uploaded one day prior has gained over 1 Million views! In this video the creator has taken bits of her speeches and created a video poking fun at her. This is no doubt apart of the pressure she faces from the Brexit fallout and her government as well as British residents to resign from office. No one is taking her seriously. (Open in new window to view video)

This post was shared from The Scotsman regarding the petition to revoke Article 50 which has gained in this post 4.2 Million signers. The petition is either in favor of the UK leaving or staying within the European Union. As well through the comments section people have highlighted that this new petition, even though good, has some questionable aspects to it. Such as the fact that it does not include in the vote for separating, to separate with a deal, which was the whole reason the UK was looking to separate in the first place. Sometimes information shared can have bias and this petition is turning out to not be as great as first thought.

Global News catching up with former Prime Minister

In this short clip shared back in January 2019 we see a news reporter for Global News catching David Cameron, former PM of the UK, on his jog. He is questioned whether or not he regrets calling the Brexit referendum to which he responds that he does not. However, he regrets the vote turnout and the mess that was made along the way. This undoubtedly led to his resign. He however supports Theresa May in finding a solution in partnering with the European Union. It really seems as though the initial Brexit referendum was not properly brought about as most in parliament thought it would be voted against and did not put in the work to weigh the pros and cons to the UK and its residents.

This Youtube video was published in January of 2019 and almost has 1 Million views. This video clearly defines what a No-Deal Brexit could do for Brits. Channel 4 news takes the time to outline this as both previous and current government leaders had not taken the time to. Previous PM David thought going into the referendum that the majority of the UK would undoubtedly be against and he was wrong. Current PM Theresa May is constantly dodging questions and avoiding a second referendum.

This is more on the hysterical side of the protest but, many were here to actually attempt to force a new vote and many are stipulating that the Democracy in the UK is broken.
