I researched into movie posters of the horror genre before I created my own, I did this to look into the conventions and to try and decide the conventions that worked best with my magazine style, I also did this to try and challenge certain conventions so that my magazine would stand out and to give it the unique style that would make my final product different to generic magazines found in shops. When creating my magazine I also found looking back at my AS coursework was very useful as we had to create a magazine cover for that as well, so I already had a good knowledge of the conventions within a magazine front cover and knew about existing magazines on the market. A large masthead is the first thing you see on a magazine as on they are designed to be the only thing a viewer can see when it is a shop shelf, I decided have my mast head in a simple sans seriff font, I used the colour Red to make it stand out and give it an eye catching appeal, it also fits in with my color scheme. Instead of having my masthead all the same I also made the '32' bolder to make it stand out against the rest of the magazine, this gives my magazine a unique edge as it is very noticeable. My masthead also challenges the convention as it is the colour blue, it does not stick to the magazines house style of darker colours (horror genre) and red (for blood), the blue allows it to be much more noticeable and also gives the brand more of a uniqueness.

for all of the coverlines and other conventions of my trailer I have used the same fonts which gives my magazine cover a specific house style, it is bold righting that can be easily seen and is mainly in black or white to contrast with the background, again making it more visible to the reader. My picture shows the main character from the film 'Nathan', I have used this picture as it has a very professional look to it, I feel that the shadow on the white back drop works perfectly as the rest of magazine can be moulded and formed around, I also chose this picture as with any magazine as with any magazine the picture quite possibly the biggest focus and this picture is extremely interesting, the eyes of the character lock onto and the picture is also very clear and visible like most professional magazines. I also feel that I have challenged the convention with the picture and background on my magazine, as in most magazine front covers that feature a horror film have a dark and creepy background, I went for white as it showed my picture clearly and also allowed the blood spots to appear clearly, this also makes the magazine more attractive as you are able to see all of the information on it very clearly.

When originally researching film magazines I looked heavily at brands like 'Empire' as they are a very well known music magazine that is extremely popular within the UK for film lovers, I looked at how they created there magazines and how they got story of the films across in simple words and pictures, I tried to follow a basic outline of a number of there magazines, changing it slightly to my own preferences, I also tried to stick to my original layouts that I had designed but changed certain features that I deemed necessary to change and tailored them to fit my magazine cover in a more appealing way for me and my audience, obviously I did not expect it to be exactly like my original designs as through experimenting with different colours, layouts and fonts I would find a way that I would be most happy with, whether I stuck to my designs or not.

Billboard

I had to look at billboards in a lot of detail before creating my own for my film as I had never designed one before and did not know a great deal about how they are constructed to create a piece of advertisement. As I researched existing billboards I realised that the conventions are very similar to that of a poster as they are basically giant posters that advertise something in the same way, when researching I looked at the 'scream' series billboards and also a billboard for the film 'The Lorax', as even though this is a completely different genre of film, I liked how one image of a face dominated the entire billboard and I found it very effective. On my billboard the 2 main items are the picture and the film title, for the picture I kept it to the side of the billboard and the information on the other side, I find that this an effective way of showing everything on the billboard without anything looking too messy or certain features getting in the way of other features as with the an image on one side it leaves space for the other features and allows everything to be placed in the right space with the right proportion of the billboard. The image is a very simple picture of Nathans mask, this can have many denotations drawn from it however like 'mystery, unknown, murder, secrecy' and also makes you think of the famous 'Scream' series that also have a masked murder, so the audience may link the mask with that film and associate this one with the same genre, saying that I do believe mine is very different as the mask is clearly a different one, but is also more of a vacant and disturbing faced mask.

The main title is also very visible, being shown clearly in a white bold font with the signature '#' on show, I have done this as billboards are usually placed in busy areas where there are lots of roads and cars, when driving by in a car you will be able to make out the name of the film just by giving the billboard a short glance. By making the title large it shows I have followed the convention as on most advertisements the title of the product is in a large and clearly presented manner so that the audience knows what they are looking at. I also chose to put it in the mid point of the far side of the page as it gave me room for more features and conventions surrounding the main title.

Featuring my actors on the billboard is also something I believe to be very useful as it will be one of the main things that make people want to come and see a film, if people see the actors names, it will reflect the quality of the production depending on there knowledge and likening of the actors involved, this is something that I personally think when looking at advertisements for new films, if I notice an actor that I like I will be more enticed to see the film.

For the background of my billboard I chose to have a smashed screen to represent the social media side of my film, the smashed part of the screen shows the danger of the side of the production (danger being Nathan trying to kill people). Most backgrounds on billboards are simple being one or 2 colours, in this case I have gone against the convention by having something a bit more interesting with a meaning behind, so going against the convention in this instant has worked out better.

Poster

My poster is extremely simple as are most film posters, it has the film title, a picture, production information, actors name and a release date, this is all that really needs to be featured on a film poster as they don't need to be crowded with lots of information, posters need to be effective and need to allow the audience to receive all the information they need to know in a short period of time as they may only be looking at it as they walk down the street and see it. When looking at existing posters I mainly looked at horror film posters and 90% of the posters I looked at all featured one image of a face, for a horror film this in my opinion is very effective as it lets the audience see the main focus of the film (as the image is usually the protagonist/horror element of the film). I chose to follow this convention as there is really no need to challenge it as it is an easy and very effective way of showing the main element of your production to your audience. Even though I did not challenge the convention, I have changed it slightly. Instead of having one face, I have multiple faces, that all vary in clarity, depth and size, this in my opinion makes the poster more interesting and could also suggest that the character 'Nathan' has more than one side to him (innocent school boy/murderer).

The title, is probably the main convention featured in my poster as it is the largest piece of the text and the main piece of information the audience needs to take in, for this exact reason I have made sure that it is clear and visible, I would say that in this instance I have followed the convention as there would be no reason to go against it due to the fact the title is extremely important and also keeps a good visual syntax that corresponds well with the rest of the poster, so there would be no reason to challenge the convention as it works extremely well. I have also added some blood that goes over the title slightly on the side of the poster, this is just to show off the genre more within the trailer as my target audience would hopefully be able to relate blood to gore/horror/violence which are all elements that my film will feature within it.7

My main actors name appears at the top of the page, this is something not is not always on film posters, so I challenged the convention to a degree by having it on there as I feel like it is a necessary convention to feature as it is also another way of marketing your product; by showing off the actors and in this case main actor that will be in your production, making your audience more interested and eager to see it.
