  • In 1933 the Nazi party banned and previously existing labour unions and used their assets to establish the DAF
Tasks:
  • in propaganda 
    • would serve as an impartial mediator between the bosses workers and state to 
  • in reality (for workers) 
    • German workers had lost their ability to effectively bargain for better hours of wages
    • going on strikes was officially banned 
    • used as a way for Hitler to keep wages low in certain sectors to stimulate certain parts of the economy
  • Supervising corporate functions
    • the DAF established several supervisory offices  to manage sociopolitical functions within the economy
    • such offices included 
      • the "Office for Vocational Education and Management" which supervised training of young men into the workforce.
      •  "Office for Social Responsibility", which promoted the "national socialist model" within the work environment.
      • the "Office for the Beauty of Work" which was in charge of creating health and safety standards and ensuring that they were met.
  • Organizing leisure activities
    • the Kdf (Kraft durch Freude) was created to organize leisure activities for all of the classes. with their establishment, they provided what were previously luxury experiences such as traveling to the working class and gave favorable terms in loans for Volkswagens 
  • Economic management 
    • The DAF initially received its funding from confiscating trade union assets but would later get its funds from compulsory contributions taken from people's wages.
    • the DAF used these funds not only for their activities but also to invest in housing and settlement companies, construction companies, insurance companies, banks, publishing and printing companies, shipyards and the VW automobile plant in Wolfsburg.

  • Movement was set up in November 1933 and the ultimate aim was to make workers fond of Hitler by offering them rewards and to keep them occupied outside the workplace.

  • Beauty of Labor was a sub-organization of the DAF that played a role in establishing the image of the German workers, encouraging Germans to view that work was good and everyone who is still mentally and physically productive should also do so.

    • Changing rooms
    • Lockers, better air
    • Less noise in factories and other places of employment
  • Slogans: “Fight against Noise”, “Good ventilation in the workplace”, “Clean people in a clean plant”
  • Increased factory inspections to benefit the workers

  • Over 330,000 workers applied to buy a Volkswagen car.
  • 180,000 Germans went on cruises and the volume of tourism doubled
  • 175,000 people went to Italy on organized trips, a lot of them using cruise liners 
  • None of the 330,000 workers who had paid in their money to the German Labour Front received their Volkswagen

  • The incentives satisfied the workers and kept them happy. It subdued resistance against the Nazis and deviated their attention from the structural changes in the country. 
  • It made up for the abolishment of trade unions and narrowed down their social class consciousness to ensure those in power can retain power
  • It created a sense of community between workers, incentivized by the state so they can be grateful to the state and unite together for the state
  • It depicted Hitler as a man of his promises
    • People believed the Volkswagen campaign, "a car for everyone"
