The intention was to provide an alternative for the people who believed certain traditions and teachings were unbiblical. Specifically Martin Luther posted the 95 theses, which were practices he believed contrasted the biblical Christianity. I do think it was successful because although Martin Luther did not plan for the protestant church to form, it still happened. So the people who did not believe in certain practices (like indulgences), had a religion where they could worship and not feel uncomfortable ( since they may have been practicing something they had not believed)
https://www.compellingtruth.org/Protestant-Reformation.html

The Crusades were a variety of religious wars between Christians and Muslims. The primary purpose was to gain control of the holy sites that were considered sacred by both religions. Many believe that the Crusades were successful because a few different factors. They helped spread Christianity and Western civilization. The Roman Catholic Church had an increase in wealth, and the power of the pope also after the Crusades ended. After the Crusades trade and travel was gaining interest, because of the need for supplies. Some historians believe that the travel through Europe paved the way for the Renaissance. I am basing this off of the Christian point of view because it benefited them more vs the Muslims, who see the Crusades as immoral.
http://www.history.com/topics/crusades

Evidence of "Historical" Jesus

The earliest evidence of Jesus Christ dates back to around 25 years after Jesus' death in the epistles of St. Paul. Another example are the gospel accounts that were recorded within 40 years of his death. Making those who recorded the evidence eye witnesses. There is also evidence by those who were not Christians or followers of Christ. For example, a Jewish, Historian Josephus Flavius, who wrote about the history of Judaism around 93 AD. He mentioned James, the brother of "Jesus, the so-called Christ." Roman politicians Pliny and Tacitus also had evidence of Jesus and his "execution."

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/apr/14/what-is-the-historical-evidence-that-jesus-christ-lived-and-died

A modern day issue that the Church faces today is gay marriage. Many hard core Catholics say there is no validity of gay marriage because they don't accept that it is the sacrament of marriage. However, after President Obama legalized gay marriage an important figure in the Catholic Church, the Pope, said that he accepts gay marriage " “If a homosexual person is of good will and is in search of God, I am no one to judge… it is not right to interfere spiritually in the life of a person.”
