1. Discuss the Washington Irving quote, "Great minds have purposes, others have wishes." Why would he have said that? What is the difference between a purpose and a wish? How do people behave when they have a purpose versus a wish?

2. How does having a clear purpose relate to expectations? In light of the push to hold high expectations for students, how might having a purpose help?

3. What is the difference between a purpose and an objective? When might each be useful?

4. Search the Internet or a teacher lesson plan and analyze an objective. Does it meet the SMART criteria? If not, what needs to be added or changed?

5. What role should standards play in the development of objectives and purpose statements?

6. How does purpose relate to attention, memory, and learning?

7. Why is purpose important in a lesson designed to increase student competence? How does purpose relate to each component of a lesson, such as modeling, guided instruction, collaborative learning, and independent tasks?

My understanding for Q1 and Q2

Q1： In my opinion, Washington Irving said so because he thought to establish a clear purpose when one makes wishes is very important and is also the key to realize one's wishes. Let's take the character for an example: although he lives in the environment full of information, he doesn't know how to do with these information, never mind to make full use of the information. That is the result of no purpose. So when teachers wish students to master what they taught, they should first let them know the learning purpose, rather than stay at the wish level, and then the students will know what and how to do with various resources provided, or the wishes will only be be wishes and will not reach satisfying effect (the relation between purpose and wishes).

Q2: For example, the teachers hope students to master new knowledge and apply it to real life. This is expectation. However, in order to realize their expectations, they need set a clear purpose, then it will be easier for them to realize their expectations, for students will be clear about what to do and learn more if they know the purpose. Besides, the teachers should consider students' different learning levels when they set learning purpose, only in this way can the students reach the most appropriate level and meet the expectation.

Q6: Teachers can tell students the purpose to get their attention, and students know what they need to learn, which is good for their learning. They can also connect the new knowledge with what they have known, which help them to understand and remember them easily.
