The preacher is focusing on describing Hell so that those listing to the sermon get a dark description of what Hell looks like to those who end up there. Also focuses on the sense of touch, because it describes the way intensity of the heat. Because you cannot see anything but flames, all you could smell would be fog and taste ash.

Joyce, when describing how hell feels and would look like, he leaves out the sense of relief. There would be no air for you to breathe, no light for your eyes to see, and no sense of anything other than an intense heat. This shows the bleak outlook Joyce had on life, which reflect on his choice of words.

An initial reading of this piece of Portrait suggests that the texts focuses on a persons transition from life to the afterlife, and that the author is concerned with Stephan's fate after he dies, however, whereas Joyce portrays the afterlife of a sinner as a dark, fiery place with no relief, the text also reveals a fearful foreshadowing because the speaker feels he might go to hell himself, because of sinful acts in the past, Stephan feels he must repent and change his ways.
