1st year
When a baby cried during the night. From being hungry or dirty diaper, etc. They expect parents to tend to their needs. Depending on whether or not the caregiver meets these needs, determines the relationship between the child and the caregiver and will affect future relationships. I couldn't imagine anyone not taking care of a child's basic needs at this age but know that even at such a young age, children know who comforts them. For example, if a stranger is holding a baby and gives the baby back to mother the baby will often stop crying, then baby feels safe again.

1-3 years
My nephew is 3 years old now. He's little mister personality all the way. He wants to do EVERYTHING on his own. Walk into school alone, pick out his own clothes, fix his plate for dinner. He even wants to try to vacuum the living room. At this stage, children are learning that they are able to do things on their own and don't have to rely on their parents as much.

3-5 years
Children continue to be more independent and gain confidence. I think at this age many children look to adults in their lives for approval and encouragement. If they don't receive praise they may feel like they aren't doing a good job or that it wasn't good enough. Parents during this stage definitely need to encourage a child for them to grow their imagination and shout interact with therm during different activities. .
