Reception scaffolding for my PBL project will be when I present to the students the knowledge and skills they will need to know when painting a portrait. I can first show them examples of famous artists' portraits and the different techniques they used. Then I myself can do a step by step demonstration on how to carry out these techniques. The students themselves have not yet picked up a paint brush; they are just absorbing the information that is being presented to them.

For transformation scaffolding, I will provide for the students little practice assignments to complete. For example, I may have them draw a square and paint one side yellow and the other side orange and show a blending of the two colors. This is not a huge project, but just a little exercise to practice shading and gradation. On the are history side of things I may present to them two famous artist and then ask them to create a venn diagram to compare the two.

In this part of the assignment the students are going to be asked to actually create a self portrait. In order to help them out, I will provide suggested steps for them to take along the way. For example, I will suggest that they first sketch their face out with pencil and there are different techniques and proportion rules that go along with that. Then I may suggest that they fill in the sketch with a neutral skin tone color. These steps will help guide the students on where to start and what to do next on a project that is very new to them. And of course I will be there for them the entire time to answer questions and critique.
