I used this to help students get to know each other. They wrote a response to the question in each box and in the blank box next to it they drew a picture that goes with it. After each student completed this individually I then assigned them partners and each student completed a half sheet in their partnerships where they wrote something they had in common with their partner and something new they learned about their partner. I think this helps build community because students get to know each other on a deeper level and recognize commonalities amongst themselves.

Classroom Community

In order for my students to have a strong sense of classroom community - classroom management must be established - where the students feel comfortable enough to work together as a group but knows the fine line between having fun and learning. Both can be accomplished when there is consistent consequences to their actions without making a student feels uncomfortable. Once this is accomplished, students who were once picked on for their knowledge will feel a sense of comfort and protected.

Encourage students to respond to each other during class discussions. Build the trust between teacher and students by allowing students to have a voice in the classroom.

It's that easy. Share personal stories, be transparent, be yourself. It's hard to stay up on all the new stuff, so it's OK to ask the students to explain it to you. You could even ask the students in a survey, "what new trends do you like?" "what trends don't you like?"

Teacher Model : Share with students"the happy place" (THP)that you go to when you need a mental brain break. Tell students that it's a safe space to share .Ask students if they would like to share thier "THP"Take volunteers. Ask students to print out a picture and post it to "THP" wall. Ask for a few volunteers daily.

I have all the students names on popsicle sticks that I pull not to "catch students off guard" but to make sure that I provide opportunities for all students to share. It helps me to avoid falling into the trap of always calling on the same students.
