What heavily connotative words are used? What words have unusual or special meanings? Are any words or phrases repeated? If so, why? Which words do you need to look up?

Madness and sense are heavily connotative words that are mentioned multiple times in the poem. Madness is what many people would consider insane. On the contrary, sense is what most would consider normal. However, it is explained that what is considered "madness" is sane. Meaning, what is considered "sense" is insane. The line, "Much Madness is divinest Sense-" proves this point. These words are repeated to compare and contrast their true and literal meanings.

What is the poem's tone? Which words reveal this tone? Is the poem ironic?

The poem's tone might be anger towards society due to the thought, as stated in the poem, the line "assent - and you are sane" portrays the thought that those who cause madness are the sane ones in the world while those who try to fit society's image are thought to be the "insane" ones. The poem is also ironic due to the comparison of the world view on those who are "sane" and "insane" and how people who are all over the place are considered sane while those who might be organized and put together are the insane ones.

What is the theme (the central idea) of this poem? Can you state it in a single sentence? Elaborate on your idea.

The theme of the poem is that what is considered irrational is actually rational. Most people in society are conditioned to think and act a certain way. This results in them believing that certain topics are "sane" and "madness." The lines, "To a discerning Eye- Much Sense- the starkest Madness-" prove this point. Those who do not have the mindset that fits society standards can distinguish this. To conclude, many things that are irrational are actually rational.

How important is the role of sound effects, such as rhyme and rhythm? How do they affect tone and meaning?

While reading the poem, the reader might notice an odd way or form of rhyming used in the poem. The rhymes are found in every other line but also skip 2 lines in the middle of the poem. These rhyming words might affect the tone of the poem because of the words that are used to rhyme. The lines "Assent-and you are sane" and "And handled with a Chain-" are rhyming the words "sane" and "chain" and are used to create the image that the sane people in the world are the ones who are messy and create madness while those who are insane are the ones who are in with the worldly things and are considered to be locked up with "chains."

In many of Emily Dickinson's poems, she uses dashes as a sort of punctuation throughout the lines. These dashes can be found in the middle or end of many lines, and are found in her poem "Much Madness is divinest Sense."
