Hi, I am Andrea Pozzali. I live in Brescia and I teach Law and Economics in a secondary school. This year I am doing my first CLIL experience and I have decided to take this course in order to improve my knowledge of this innovative methodology. In this padlet I will share the materials and experiences made during the five weeks of the course

In my opinion, CLIL is a very interesting innovation in our schools. I think that the use of a foreign language, English in my case, as a medium to communicate another subject can represent a great experience for our students. It allows them to understand the importance of knowing a foreign language, as a way of getting in touch with other cultures and to expand their points of view. It can also give them new motivations to study the specific subject

CLIL and digital technologies

In my opinion, digital technologies can be very helpful in CLIL, because they can increase students’ motivation. Moreover, they allow to use different kind of media, and in this way they can somehow alleviate the cognitive burden involved in learning a specific subject in a foreign languages. Using videos, or infographics, can allow students to grasp the essential points of a given topics, without having to rely only on specific texts that can be difficult to understand.

The only critical point that I would like to underline has to do with the necessity of carefully selecting and preparing the materials that can be used for the students. Unfortunately, there is a scarcity of “official” materials, and so teachers must do a complex work of selection, validation and (eventually) production of the materials to be used in class

4th week: Extended reading

This week has given us many interesting suggestions. Honestly, as a teacher of law and economics in an upper secondary school, I find some difficulties in fully applying the methodology of extensive reading in my classes. Anyway, I think that some specific tools can be quite useful. In particular, I would like to explore the use of Wordle, as it can help students to immediately grasp the most important concepts of a given text. Also Newsela can represent a significant help, as it enables a teacher to adapt the content of the text to the specific linguistic skills of his students.

I will surely try to explore the use of these tools in my classes. Thank you for having given us so many interesting stimuli!

CLIL: Strenghts and Weaknesses

The most relevant strenght I personally find in CLIL is that it can increase students' motivation by involving them into an active process of using English as a channel to learn a specific subject. It's also a good way to immerse into a different culture and it can help them in developing an open mind.

As for the weaknesses, I have to admit that CLIL is a complex task, as it entails a sort of double cognitive effort: on one side, students have to deal with the specific cognitive demands of the subject, while at the same time trying to developing the proper linguistic skills required in order to communicate in a foreign language. For this reason, I think that CLIL represents a sort of ideal field for the application of modern learning and teaching technologies, that can facilitate students to develop their skills
