Ros is so very very confused . . . he thinks that Hamlet has a daughter and that Hamlet is in love with this daughter that he supposedly has and he further confuses himself about Polonius  . . . he thinks that Polonius (the old man) is in love with his own daughter (Ophelia). Ultimately, they decide to let Hamlet walk into their trap, Hamlet avoids the trap and continues on. Ros and Guil don't do anything about it. This incident represents their characters; they were initially ready to carry out the plan and trap Hamlet, but when it came time to actually do it they became too indecisive and in consequence their plan failed. This is representative of them throughout the whole play, as they are not willing to follow through.(pg. 86-90)
While they do succeed in calling Hamlet over to them, they are unable to deliver him to the King. Hamlet confuses them while he talks to them and the get flustered as a result, when they attempt to bring him to the King, Hamlet tricks them and they bow- entangling themselves and during this confusion- Hamlet escapes. The significance of this scene is that yet again, Ros and Guil's bad understanding of a situation causes them to miss an opportunity that can create an impact or make a change. This reflects their characters throughout the whole play. The players are angry with Ros and Guil because along with the rest of the audience, they left during the players' performance. The players explain to R&G that being an actor, you give all of yourself for the sake of the performance, and it was frustrating that no one paid attention.
