At 16, all Amish teenager are allowed to experience the outside world, which they are not allowed to after their baptism. When the amish teenager are allowed to go see the outside world, its called "rumspringa". This means "running around". Rumspringa can be a very difficult time for the amish teenagers. This is the first time they have to choose if they want to be baptized and live the rest of their live Amish, or if they want to leave the Amish church and live an "english" life. 

If the Amish teenager choose to be baptized and join the Amish church. If an Amish decides to leave after being baptized, they will be shunned. This means that no one from the Amish community is allowed to interact with the shunned. However, if a shunned person decides to rejoin the Amish church he/she is allowed to do so.

The Amish people talk a language called Pennsylvania Dutch, but most of them can also speak English. 

They use buggies instead of cars. 

They don’t have churches, they go to church, in each other’s basements, where there just is a preacher. 

They try to avoid the modern world, so they don’t live with any technology.

The Amish are skilled farmers and craftsmen, that means that the Amish don’t work for money, but they work for their family and survival. They drive wagons, and buggies.

When the Amish teenagers turn sixteen, they are allowed to live as they want to. 

The teenagers have a period called “rumspringa”. Rumspringa is a time where the teenagers can decide if they rather will be Amish, or not be Amish. The teenagers can also do what they want, when it´s Rumspringa   - They go to parties, drink alcohol, have sex. They do all the things they usually can´t do.

If the teenagers decide not to be Amish, the teenagers are shunned, and the Amish do not want to take with him/her.

The kids in the school, are called “Young Scholars” by their family.

The family expect the kids to work hard at the school, so they are ready for their future life. 

The Amish community was greated by Jacob Amman in 1693.

When an Amish turns 16 he or she can do whatever they want. This is called Rumspringa. This means that parents no longer can decide what is right for the teenager. They’re on their one. They can go to parties, get drunk, smoke and drive cars. Usually they come home at night and sleep at home. 

At some point, they must decide whether they’re going to join the Amish church. If they decide to get baptized they must live Amish for the rests of their lives. If an Amish gets baptized but afterwards decides thy don’t want to live Amish, they’ll get shunned. When you get shunned no one will talk to you even though you’re related to them. That’s why the teenagers get their Rumspringa period. About 85-90% of Amish teenagers chooses to return to the Amish community.

In an Amish village, you won’t find a church because the people in the village will host the ceremony in a basement, living room or a barn. They’ll take turns, so everyone gets to host a ceremony. Then they’ll have preachers come and preach to the people. In a ceremony women and children are separated from the men. They’ll sit in each side of the basement. 

The first Amish settled in Pennsylvania in the USA around 1700-1730.

God, family and Amish community are their most important thing and they believe that the best way to preserve these things are by living a life based on farming and don’t use cars, phones and stuff like that.

The Amish people are a religious group of people that lives mostly without any sort of modern technology. They live the old fashion way and only modern technology selected by the local church, most be used in their lives. For an example that could be electric turn signals on their horse carriages. No matter where the group of Amish people live they speak the Pennsylvanian German dialect (except for a few places). 

Rumspringa:

Rumspringa means “running around” and is basically the time where young amish boys and girls, needs to find out if they want to stay amish or not. The Rumspringa starts when you are about age 16 and allows you to drink, party, drive cars and wear normal “English” clothes. Rumspringa ends with marriage. If you don’t choose to get baptized you have to leave the amish community. The same happens if you brake any of the rules that the amish people lives by. You will have to leave everyone you know and you will then get shunned.
