Origin Stories

Through one medium or another, superhero stories have been around for thousands of years. Most superhero stories follow the same structure. As the mythologist Joseph Campbell wrote, "a hero battles “supernatural” forces and returns home “from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man".

Generally, superheros go through through three types of life altering experiences that we can relate to. (Before they become superheroes)

The first is trauma. This is seen in many superhero origin stories, but this is seen most clearly seen in Batman's origin story. After Bruce Wayne,as a child, sees his parents brutally murdered In real life; he commits his life to fighting crime. Many people experience “stress-induced growth” after a trauma and resolve to help others, even becoming social activists.

Destiny is the second life altering force. Consider Buffy the Vampire Slayer, about a normal teenager who discovers she’s the “Chosen One”—endowed with supernatural powers to fight demons. Buffy is reluctant to accept her destiny, yet she throws herself into her new job. Many of us identify with Buffy’s challenge of assuming a great responsibility that compels her to grow up sooner than she wants to.

Lastly, there’s sheer chance, which transformed a young Spider-Man, who was using his power for selfish purposes until his beloved uncle was murdered by a street thug. Spider-Man’s heroism is an example of how random, unrelated events cause many of us to take hold of our lives and choose a different path.

Their is also many other types origin stories that branch these main ones. Such as the coming of age story, where the protagonist becomes a superhero when they grow into a wise and responsible adults. Many 20 somethings resonate well with this story.

In the end, the goal of a superheros origin stories is to inspire, give us aspiration and shed hope on our lives.

When analysing a piece of media its good idea to use SWAT codes.

SWAT

Symbolic Codes:
The secondary meaning represented by particular objects or symbols in the film. We can find symbolism in objects (such as a cross symbolising Christianity), setting (beach symbolising reflection, contemplation), costumes (designer suit symbolising someone who is very well off, important), colours (black symbolises evil, white symbolises peace and purity) and many more.

Written Codes:
Any text that appears on the screen, either as a part of the film itself (product names, signs, newspapers) or through credits, subtitles etc.

They can be used to communicate specific ideas/information to the audience more easily. (However, this is not always the case)

Audio Codes:
In a piece of media audio codes can be ANY sound effects, such as; dialogue, music, laugh track ect.

Music can be a really useful to set the tone of a scene. For example in Captain America : Civil War the soundtrack is used to set the tone of Patriotism and Hope. (Soundtrack at the bottom of the page)

Technical Codes:
They're anything that is used to construct an image.
Things like: Camera shots, special effects, lighting ect. For example: In CA:CV usually when hulk is in frame the director would use a low angle camera shot. Which makes the viewer feel powerlessness/weak in view of him. This technique also exaggerates his size in comparison to the other characters.

Symbolism is heavily used in in almost All superhero

The Anti-heroes are the heroes weakness because every good has an opposite. For instance Superman's weakness is Kryptonite and the only villain that knows his weakness is Lex Luthor. And another eggs
ample is Batman and his weakness is that he is only man and joker knows his secret identity and uses his weakness to beat batman down. Like the villains listed the rest of the villains uses their arch-enemy's weakness's to beat them every time. The villains always look at the heroes as antagonists and the heroes look at the villains as antagonists so it is a complete circle.

Batman's parents both get shot and he wants to get revenge and to protect Gotham City from bad guys like the guy that shot his parents. Bruce chooses the bat for his symbol because he has a bat phobia stemming from a childhood accident. He picks his own most-feared creature and turns it on his enemies, hoping that he will make himself stronger by using a symbol which actually frightens him.

WHAT IS THE STEREOTYPICAL SUPERHERO?

The modern day conventional superhero has many important traits. These traits include: motivated, abnormal, has a certain strength or ability, and has high relateability.

Motivation:
A conventional superhero always something that motivates them to fight crime, stop the apocalypse, save their significant other, ect.

Batman isn't the most conventional hero, but he's a good eggswample for motivation. Batman, as a child, watched his child get murdered in front of him. This event completly destroyed his worldview, but also gave him the motivation to fight against crime infested city of Gotham.

Why Batman isn't considered stereotypical:

Batman isn't considered 'stereotypical', because he has a dark tone around his identity. Stereotypical hero's are bright, happy and are they have a clear view of right and wrong. Additionally, Batman doesn't have any supernatural abilities nor does he have any physical advantages, unlike most heroes. He trained to become the vigilante he wanted to become.

TO WHAT EXTENT DOES AGE OF ULTRON FOLLOW THIS?

All of the characters in Age of Ultron (AOU) are unique and have their own personality flaws. Their all quite 3-dimensional.

At first glance the heroes in AOU might seem conventional, but if you delve deeper into the personality of these heroes you can see that their quite the opposite.

Firstly lets start with Iron Man,Tony Stark(played by Robert Downy Jr). Through out Tony Stark's character arc,Including after becoming Iron Man, he remains being a self absorbed prick. While he is still a likable character to the audience, in the world he lives in hes quite arrogant and a little naive. 'Normal' superheros are always nice, friendly, easy going and likable.

Tony Stark could be considered naive, because of how he has such a narrow worldview. This is clearly shown when he sells weapons to corrupt governments and is surprised when they use the weapons for terrorism.

The above example also shows one of his greatest personality flaws. The flaw being that he regularly fails to recognize that his actions have severe actions on the people and the world around him.

Heroes secret identities

All heroes have secret identities that hide their true identities from everybody other then who they truly love

This is also why many where costumes as to hide there identity, though superman/clark kent where big glasses when not in costume as to hide his identity rather than when wearing a mask when in costume.

Solution means to solve the problem in any form.
-Eggsample
In lots of movies the hero has to solve the problem which is the villan trying to destroy the world or sometimes the villan saves the world like megamind. He started off as a villan because he thinks his parents said his destiny was to be evil. but thoughout the movie he kills the villan, he starts having feelings for a girl and he makes another villan but the girl of his dreams is taken by megamind so he starts to become a villan and starts destorying the city and megamind trys to stop him. Long story shot, he becomes a hero and saved the town
