While Queen, no one was allowed to rival her attire and maids were punished if they wore dresses that were even a tiny bit to sumptuous. Hygiene in the Elizabethan age was very poor, most people didn't very often and just used perfumes or sweet waters to cover the smell. When there was any kind of surgery people would often die because of infections from germs. Toilets were't very common either, there were a couple in each down but most people used a chamber pot or urinated in the fireplace.

William Shakespeare was baptized on April 26, 1564 in Stratford, England but his date of birth is unknown. While he was alive he wrote about 37 plays and more than 150 poems. In 1582 he married Anne Hathaway. There is some controversy over whether Shakespeare wrote his own plays, however most agree because there are no other claims to this work. Shakespeare had a vocabulary of 24,000 words from 7 different languages.

The Globe Theatre is a famous theatre where Shakespeare's plays were performed. The Globe was was built by Shakespeare's company in 1598. Richard Burbage played a main role in the Lord Chamberlain's - King's Men. Some more mention able Elizabethan actors beside Shakespeare are Edward Alleyn, John Heminge, and William Rowley. Plays at this time usually fell into three categories: histories, tragedies, and comedies. Histories were usually stories from England's past. Tragedies told sad stories about death and love, an example of a tragedy would be Rome and Juliet. Comedies were usually happy and ended with wedding and/or true love.

Queen Elizabeth inherited the throne at the age of 25 in the year 1558. Before this she was not considered a legitimate heir to the throne, due to political reasons and didn't inherit the throne until the death of her half sister. During Elizabeth's reign she converted England to Protestantism and defeated the Spanish armada. She also established peace in England which was once very divided.

Shakespeare had a huge impact on the English language. A lot of the phrases that he came up with and used in his plays were also put into “A Dictionary of the English Language” by Samuel Johnson. Shakespeare invented these new words and phrases by borrowing from other languages, adding prefixes and suffixes as well connecting other words. Some words that he came up with were obscene, addiction, bedazzled, swagger, and outbreak.
