Leah Wakelin - I have worked with my students to address a variety of cultures that are specific to my students throughout our dance classes together. We have talked about different types of dances from around the world, what costumes are worn, who is present, who is not, and why dance is important in all cultures. I think this gave my students the opportunity to share about their own experiences and have others learn from them as a direct source of knowledge. We have had in depth conversations about culture and I feel that everyone has been represented at some point throughout our classes

Mariam Sheikhali - The last two weeks in my gr. 9 geography classes we have been going over the demographics unit. This gave me the perfect opportunity to ensure the various cultures in the classroom were represented in the lessons and activities. When talking about different parts of the world students were more inclined to participate and engage with the content more. This gave students the chance to talk about their backgrounds, and aspects of their cultures. Do I encourage critical thinking, even when it reflects values different from my own.

In order to remain objective and encourage critical thinking among students, educators must be mindful of their own biases/prejudices towards both their students and the material they are teaching/subject. It is not up to the educator to decide what information is and is not important and should or shouldn't be investigated. This is something that we both do prior to teaching a lesson. It is also important for the educator themselves to be well rounded in the material that they are teaching. When a full perspective is present, it is easier for an educator to remain objective instead of providing Soli opinion, the lowest form of reason.

In addition, when encouraging critical thinking in the classroom, we want to encourage students to become strong global citizens who are aware and respectful of the positions and values of others. One example of a way that we can encourage healthy dialogue among a variety of values is to encourage our students to engage in formal debates with critical and substantial material. In practicing to dialogue with each other in debates, we can encourage students to not only hear and receive a variety of perspectives, but how they can then think critically about their own positions and values.
